Cool pic... I would frame that and hang it on a wall. Didn't know how to comment on just that pic so I screenshot it.

Just thought I’d make a post celebrating my year anniversary of having my Marans, they hatched a year ago yesterday. Four BCMs, a BlCM and three cross breed chicks hatched, I had them in my bedroom for three weeks because the shed got too cold. One cockerel mysteriously disappeared the day we moved them to the allotment, and then later a pullet died from gapeworm, leaving me with a trio of pure marans and a trio of crosses. I’ll just post a few pictures of Loki, Natasha, (BCM roo and hen) Chanel (BlCM), Wanda, Potato (SD Welsummer x Warrens) and Freddy (barnyward mix roo) growing up.

P.S, sorry I said a few and attached 40! And @wrathsfarm , feel free to make a comeback joke about Loki’s tail.
ice looking birds. There is one way out for you from the tail. Breed Loki to BC hen , hatch few cockerels , select thd best one and mate him back to his Dam to get ready of the bad tail gene s . Do a same thing with your BLC hen. Each generation cross it back to they mothers . You should have cockerels with a good tails like they mother BC hen in few back cross generations.
Or find a BC cockerel from different blood line with a good tail.
I do not recommend that you keep Loki daughters that tail will stay with you for ever.
Breed son s from him and remove him from your breeding programs
All the best.

One of the BCM chicks is looking like a cockerel (not definite yet), but will have one copy of yellow legs. I’m going to see how they grow, but the tail is still short. Ideally I can only have one BCM roo for this year at least, so if this chick is better quality overall I can replace Loki and hopefully rehome him to save him from the 🥘. The BLCM is almost certainly a pullet, and the other blue one (the little one) is growing feathers with silver peppering so is probably half Welsummer/ Freddy the cross.
When I get Cuckoos I’ll make a good tail a priority so when they’re bred to the BC hens they should be alright.

this is the chick, it’s not the best photo but it’s comb is much pinker than the others and the shoulders have some red on. It also has purple sheen.

It's wild how everyone else has such massive comb and wattles on their marans where I have medium sized through and through, some hens leaning to teeny sized single combs. Do other people who face cold extremes in winter find that their flock's comb size diminishes over time?

There's been frostbite damage. I didn't dub.

Marans should have medium combs, that’s what the standard says I think. Medium comb doesn’t really have a set value though, I’d say it should be impressive but not obviously large like a leghorn’s or even a Welsummer’s.
