International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

My marans are now 10 weeks old. I hatched them from eggs obtained from a local breeder who was breeding for egg color only. I’m not sure if they are worth trying to breed for standard or to build an olive egger flock. Right now I’m just keeping an open mind and having fun raising chickens and following along with everyone else’s flocks.

Thank you form your comments. I’m near capacity for my coop so I don’t plan on doing any hatching soon. I’ll think things over and possibly build more housing and hatch some eggs in the spring. If these look like a decent starting point I might get a couple dozen more eggs from the same breeder. His price was less than most people in the area are asking for BYM hatching/eating eggs.

If you want to breed from them get different line from the breeder you know when you buy more eggs from him . You don t want to breed brothers and sisters together bad practice .

Ok thanks. So maybe I’ll use these cockerels with my current Easter Eggers and olive eggers pullets. And get a feel for breeding chickens in general. Then I can start looking for an unrelated line of black copper marans if I decide that I want to get serious with a marans project.

That will be a great move. Good luck
