International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Wasn't able to catch her laying yesterday so I'm just assuming this is her second egg.
No speckles on this one and a tad darker, color more uniform.
The other 2 pullets are not showing much interest in the nest box just yet so fairly confident it's from DA.
Same shape and size, but the sheen is glossier, not as dull as her first. If it is hers she's definitely getting her ink jets sorted out.
I'm very pleased and it was the highlight of my day.

What is going on with Axl’s comb? Is this a pecking injury, foul pox, or frostbite? I do have 3 cockerels and 15 pullets all housed together I haven’t witnessed any serious fights. Sometimes I hear squabbles but when I go to see what’s going on they all stop what they’re doing and follow me around begging for treats.

Temperature did get down to 15f so frostbite could be possible I guess. They do have a dry wind free coop so I thought I didn’t really have to worry about frostbite yet. Any help is appreciated. He doesn’t seem to be in any pain even when I tried to clean it he didn’t act like touching his comb bothered him anymore than just touching him anywhere else.

The blade and tip could be frostbite but I would not expect that in a dry coop with good ventilation. If it is you'll know for sure in a couple days.

Fowl pox is carried by mosquitos so I've never seen it here in cold seasons. So the other spots may be from pecking or injury from wire or shrubbery.

At this point it doesn't look like any thing to worry about to me.

Handsome guy!

Maybe the coop isn’t as draft free as I thought. I did have the window partially opened. Really just a crack but I guess depending on wind direction it might have gotten a bit breezy. I figured that if they got too cold they would move down to the lower roost bar away from any of the vents. I guess I’ll close the window and creep an eye on things for now.

It is dry inside for sure I keep their drinking water outside and the roof overhang does a good job keeping any rain from coming in. The bedding is always supper dry almost to the point of being dusty if I use anything but the large flakes.

that is caused by the cold but some time they comb does get darker for no reason maybe some thing we don t understand ,I see it some time in my rooster but will go away after few day .if does stay longer and start to get purplish than it is frost bit ,we don t have it here in Oz @Bantambird has more experience than me in this area .

She is very pretty.
I know your super busy hatching but when you can, could you explain the early feathering type you are talking about?
This is what we want to breed towards?
How do we tell the difference between early feathering and slow feathering types?
early feathering type when the chicks feather grow very fast .they will have a full wing featheres and a full tail by week 2 some earlier .
slow feathering type the chicks feathers grow very slowly no tail at all till week 6 or later
very slow feathering type no feathers att all only the few at the wing they stay with they hatch down expose for very long time .we don t want that .
marans have both genes early and slow feathering type . if we breed them properly they will help us sexing the chicks at hatch ,
early feathering rooster mated to a slow feathering hen =all the cockerels chicks will be slow feathering type and all the pullets will be early feathering type ( Sex linked ) but has to be is this order .if we reverce the order let say slow feathering rooster mated to a early featherting hen we will not have a similar result no sex linked .
hope that help
I ll find photos when I m free lot to do today building a broody box for my Tuesday hatch

It very well could be frostbite, I am sure you know by now, it will have started contracting by now. It does not look bad at all. He might loose the tips.

Seems to me that any airflow coming in the window would be suctioned up into the airflow going across the top up and over the roost.
What is the distance from their roost to the bottom of the vents up top? Your looking for a minimum of 12", I push more closer to 16"+. You could add a furnace filter to your venting, that would cut down on any wind coming in, but still allow your airflow.
Like said it does look mild if it is frostbite. I've got pics of Kong before and after frostbite, he looks better now than he did before 🙂
But his comb was huge.
