International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Is black wing a fault
Is that a question? And do you mean black shoulder?
I posted 2 separate sets of pics of Red/Yellow. The first set looks like he has black shoulders and @Bantambird confirmed. The second set looks like he's got copper/mahogany coming in now a week later. Late bloomer?
Unless I'm mistaken I'm reading this is over melanization correct?

I've got 4 boys from Betty..
Red band
Red/yellow band
Red/orange band is head spot.
And Red/green.

And 3 boys from Angel..
Blue bands all same age penned together.

Roughly 7 other boys much younger growing out. It's hard to keep count.

Ooops! That was the beginning of a question that I was going to ask a few days ago, it got saved when I replied to the later photos. I figured it was over melanisation because I didn’t know of a gene that masked shoulder colour specifically.

Ahhhh gotcha....when you have time would you mind giving me a thorough go thru on both boys?

I'll try to get a couple more of them posted tomorrow. The last 2 from Betty are red/green who's got heavy color in his chest all the way to his shanks and red/orange which was head spot at hatch. He's got the m comb and I also see a good size hump on his back, not sure what causes that.

this guy has more red shoulder that I can see, keep an eye on him. These guys are slow growers so they take so long to mature that being small at first can sometimes make you overlook them. Nice long back, pointy tail. His comb is a little messy, though.

Thank you. Yes, the combs are definitely going to need work at some point. The 2 little ones from you are what I need for combs, along with type and their disposition and everything else. 🤗

Bad news with my Marans, I lost Esme (my second gen BlCM hen) to a swollen crop last week, and then randomly the black copper pullet from my most recent hatch. Now I’m back to my original trio, plus Napoleon the BlCM cockerel and only gen 3 (line bred).

I need to go to the auctions soon to get rid of some silkie and welsummer boys and will try to pick up marans hens there, as I need more hens in with Loki ideally as there is only two marans and two legbars in there.

This means I can finally get some cuckoo marans (hopefully) to start the GCM breeding project next year, the only problem is securing good quality as many English Cuckoo marans are poorly bred, at least at the lower price range auctions.

I’m sorry to hear this. I wish you luck in your search for new breeding stock

I am so sorry! I had issues in the past with impacted crop/sour crop. I stopped dumping grass clippings in my pen and haven't had an issue since. It's not the green clippings as much as the dried clippings that were left over. It formed a ball and they couldn't pass it.
