International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I normally try to get good all around pics of every angle for 1st selection for breeders around 18-20 wks as that seems to be prime butcher age in my area.
Just pointing out that's a good age to start seeing first indicators and selection point for butchering if that's an option..

Not saying you have to, especially if you have the space to keep them.

I grew out a lot of boys last year and needed the space as early as possible. I'm down to 7 total.
Good advice. I’ll give it another month to make up my mind.

Also want to add that I’ve enjoyed thumbing through your thread. You have some great looking birds!

Just turned 1y last month. Notice the white in his tail feathers? Haha. He’s not for breeding so not too worried about his looks, but otherwise he’s a looker!

Pictures of Napoleon I got today. He’s getting bigger now. His tail feathers are coming in again but they seem to be at an ideal angle. His breast is over coloured but this won’t matter so much in the Golden Cuckoos. His comb is funky but I like his wide, round wattles.

I need some Vaseline for his scaley legs.View attachment 4051991View attachment 4051992View attachment 4051993View attachment 4051994
His shade of blue against the copper is stunning ♥️

We had an issue on the delivery for the SCMs (Silver Cuckoo Marans), trying again this week. I’ll give a photo dump when they arrive.

Just a question if anyone else has an answer: how reliable is breeding leg feathers out by gradual breeding, rather than breeding in genetically pure clean legged birds?
@Bantambird , am I right in saying some of your marans have been clean-legged, just because you always choose the least leg feathers?
yes. I do indeed get clean legged birds occasionally
My goal is light leg feathering on the outside shank with the feathering on the outside toe only. Sometimes you do get clean legs.
