International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

if you can find eggs locally for about $60 a dozen... You could get an incubator and about 5 dozen eggs with the same $475.
I have 4 incubators and 5 BCM eggs in 1 of them. I have another dozen on the way. Problem is they are light colored I think. Not even close to 7 probably. Here's a picture of 1 of them in the sun.

you see, it can be hard to know the real color of eggs displayed on the internet. Lighting makes a real difference, and people selling marans eggs have used lighting to make their eggs look darker than natural sunlight would show. Simple filters can enhance eggs, too. It sort of looks like they may be filtering because the egg chart next to those eggs doesn't have much variation. I might just be a little aghast at that price, though... phew! I charge 10 dollars straight run, pick up only for chicks, but my local market won't support much higher, and I don't want to overcharge anyone. Breeding chickens doesn't usually make enough profit to live off of, it is because you love it and you are trying to offset feed costs and cover for next year. That might be just me, though. I am certainly the least business like woman around.

I found a BCM breeder with egg color 7-9. She won't ship eggs anymore but sells chicks for $60 each. Is this reasonable or ridiculous? I want some very dark eggs but I'm not sure what a reasonable price should be.

someone worked hard to achieve something. her chicks cannot be sold with hatchery price. btw, not every single egg will hatch. it all costs.

I found another breeder with definitely 8 chocolate eggs. Stunning eggs.. They originally came from Stallings Farms. She had a more reasonable price for chicks so I ordered a bunch from her.

Chicks for the thread. A birchen( black silver) and a recessive white.
So what do you guys think happened genetically with the hen that started out birchen, started mottling, then became pure white... was she recessive white, but didn't express it right away? I had to keep her. She's a very pretty hen. View attachment 4117801

any strain of chooks if kept and bred in isolation will start to mutate ,happen to my friend Philippe in France with his Wheaten strain after 10 years as pure wheaten they start throwing Black tail buff , it is a reason we have all this lovely chooks varieties ,
happy for you my friend ,and blessing
