Hello, I'm Josh from SC, me and my wife are new chicken handlers, we've taken in 2 black silkie roos that somebody locally was looking to re-home about a month, month and a half ago and ordered Cali white hens by mail through Tractor Supply via Hoover Hatchery. The girls are about 3 1/2 weeks old now.
We currently have 9 chickens, the 2 black Silkie roos and 7 Cali White hen chicks.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They're actually quite entertaining to watch. Apparently also quite dumb but endearing quirky birds. They're very interesting.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy Jeeps, guns, video games, offroading, BBQing and tinkering.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We're a family of 3 (Me, my wife and our son) living on a country acre trying our hand at self sufficient living at least in part. Originally from PA, relocated to SC around 5 years ago. She's also got a daughter still in PA from a previous relationship who gave us a granddaughter who can't wait to come down and see Mimi and Poppy's chickens.
We recently lost our 16 year old rat terrier so the chickens are semi-pets with the benefit of providing us food in the form of eggs and possibly meat as they age out of production and by way of subsequent generations.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
BYC kept coming up in Google search results as I've been researching different things about raising chicks, building coops and our specific "breeds" (as I understand it, California White's are a hybrid and not considered a breed)
Can't wait to see what the offspring of the Silkie roos and these Cali White hens turn out to look like/what kind of personality they have.
