hi Stephanie. I'm an academic & don't like birds [they feel waaay too fragile!] but I garden & keep chickens [small flock about to expand ~ like double!] & they are my deal because Hubby is a horticulturalist & they eat things they shouldn't so, you know, not alone & all that. lol We're all mad here. :D

Hi there:frow welcome!

You might need these pointers:

Since you hate poop, you’ll either clean your coop everyday or you’ll have them piled up to high heaven. I went for the former, aside from keeping the coop and run dry to avoid smell, I scoop the poop boards and top them with new beddings every morning before they step on them and track them all over including the nest. Is it a chore, yes it is, but an easy one - takes me 10-15 minutes early morning routine (including watering and feeding) before heading to work so wife and kids can gather clean eggs after school.

Disposable gloves by the door and my pockets save the day most of the time on accidentally getting poopy fingers. I’ve learned to always wear “chicken clothing”, boots, over pants and jacket stored in the feed storage before entering the coop or the the run, and get them laundered every 3 days. Supervise free ranging in limited allocated areas prevent accidental poop tracks in the back foyer or front of our house. Good luck with your new adventures.

Welcome! Glad you decided to join :thumbsup I love my mixed flock, really enjoy hanging out with them. After some trial and error my last coop is easy to clean and poop boards are the best!!! Brace yourself for lots of dust from chicks in the brooder, they are so cute though, you won’t mind (initially). They go through the ugly awkward teenage stage but I love my hens, I think they are beautiful .... and sassy and spoiled:wee

Thanks for sharing your beautiful flock!! I see many of the same I'll be getting! :) For a number of reasons, after the first day or so, I'm planning to brood right in the coop using the MHP method (which is what I spent literally all day yesterday looking into!), so I'm hoping the dust doesn't get *too* dusty. ;)
ETA: I just noticed you are from Middleton!! We love Middleton and visit frequently (unfortunately in passing through to AFCH for our son's many specialist visits and surgeries...).
