Hey There,
I am new to the chickens-as-pets club. I have 3 one-day-old, hopefully girls. My daughter is trying to talk me into adding a duckling to the group, so I am open to any thoughts people may have on that idea. We have had pet ducks in the past. I am looking forward to having my own egg producers!

Hi and welcome to BYC and congrats on your new chicks. I've never kept ducks, so I have little to offer based on experience but its not something that I would do.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - Find Your State Thread

Best wishes

Glad you're here !

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, if you're into gardening, feel free to join this years SEED SWAP (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/seed-swap.1220129/)

Welcome to BYC! If you get one duck, you should get 1 or 2 buddies for it. And you will want more chickens, so just get them now so they are the same age. Welcome to Chicken Math 101!
You are going to spend a lot of time thinking about chickens, and we hope to see you back here looking up all the great chicken info and making new friends!:welcome

Ducks love to play and splash water - chickens don't like being wet- having them together doesn't work out well in a coop. If they have separate coups but, free range together, I imagine that would work okay. You could ask you questions on the "Duck thread."

Welcome!! We're glad you joined us!
The others are right. Ducks and chickens "can" co-exist just fine, but they really need buddies of their own type too. Separate sleeping areas are highly suggested.
Ducklings are very messy! But they make up for it in cuteness!
