He is a great rooster. I have two special needs children. When we first got our chickens everyone told us to be careful with any rooster, that he may hurt the boys. This one lets the boys pick him up all the time and has even been very gentle around the little chicks. If he's eating and a chick (any age) comes over to eat with him, he will freeze in his tracks until the little one has moved...like he doesn't want to take a chance on hurting it. It has been really amazing. Sooo... That's why I was wondering if this was 'normal' for roosters since I'm still kinda new to it. I want about 50 or so chickens (we now have 18). Will his chicks have a tendency to be like that too?
Mel P, Love that picture. "Touch this little guy and you're gonna get a piece of this!"
Houdini1961, I would just be very cautious. If you want to introduce them. Definately do it supervised and then even if they seem fine. I don't think that I personally would leave them alone, but you are going to have to watch and see what will work best for you. I'm sure either way, it will be fun to watch the reactions!
But you know what?...that was a long time ago. That rooster, Buffy is now just over a year old and that chick, Lucky, turned out to be another rooster! I still have them both but they have to be separated as most roosters have to be.
I hold them both every day. Buffy is always sweet but at dusk sometimes, watch out! Lucky is very impulsive. He will practically attack sometimes to get held and then rests his head on my chest and closes his eyes. He's kind of immature for his age of 11 months, maybe because his Mom was killed and he was an only child. Sometimes I think he thinks I'm his Mother.
Sometimes when I put him back in his area, he will jump into his container and make crying sounds. I feel bad but I can't hold him forever. I've been told his father was a Rhode Island Red, his Mother was a Barred Rock.
My gentler Buffy is an Opington. My Mookie who passed away was a Barred Rock.
My roosters do get jealous when I am holding the other one so I give them ALL alot of attention!
