Hi!

I’m new to chickens but inherited a few from the prior homeowner. One of them went broody and we introduced 2 baby chicks to her (about 1 week old) 3 days ago. Everything went great. We want more chickens than 4 but I was nervous to introduce too many new birds since I’m new to this. We want about 6-8 total. Is it too late to introduce more chicks? I am also not sure how many the one mom can raise at once.

Thank you for all your help!

Do you have room for 6-8 birds? If you try adding more chicks and she rejects them, are you able to brood them yourself?

Also keep in mind that hens' production is highest in the first 2 years, after that it'll slowly start to decline. If egg production is important to you, I'd advise adding more birds next year, or the year after, to keep production up.

Thank you so much for the advice! We do have more room but egg production is important. We will wait until next year for adding.

The mom and her two new babes are doing really well right now. She introduced the little ones to the other bird in the flock yesterday and things have been going great.
