Introducing Mr. Blue Buns!

Thank you! All the rest of my rabbits are actually mixed breeds for my broken blue rex-coated, mandolin-shaped meat-mutt project. Fiona is strictly a pet (wrong color for everything I'm doing, and she was a "whoopsie" mom/son breeding from previous owner and I want to preserve my ability to linebreed myself without compromising genetic integrity), but I've also got her mom "Susie,", a broken black F1 rex/flemish, and her (Susie's) no name (yet; she deserves one) himilayan rex/flemish/CA/NZ daughter who is a whopping beefy 12 lbs.

I am hopefully getting one of @Sara L 's little half-rex chinchilla babies.

And I have an F1 rex / american blue doe I'm hopefully picking up once she weans her 11(!) babies.

This guy is hopefully going to get shown (beginning at the ARBA convention in Oct - AHHHH intimidating), but there's still a good chance there's DQ's I am missing. Hopefully I can get some good feedback on his shape either way. Apparently people do that intentionally with DQ's all the time. I know that rusty on his forehead is going to be a big mark off but I have no clue what else I'm missing.

He has grown half a lb in the last week, I swear

Wow your meat mutt project sounds very cool! Ive been helping my uncle get off of his bunnies so he can give me the cages for quail. He has a Hare type and theyre really hard to clean. That is All the experience i have w rabbits. Ill b following along here now :caf

Oh, I adore the Belgian hares and other runner-type things, they are so wonderful! You must try and post pics!

As it would happen i posted his craigslist ad to get rid of em so i have these pics :lau

Im alot more worried about the cage ill get. Its a trampoline frame w a 3 hole wire cage and a 4 hole both hung inside attached to a 5 gal water bucket system :drooling covered in tin the whole outside and i will probly enclose the front and back w hardware cloth to make the thing as a whole into a pen as well as the wire cages.

Those are wonderful @mixedUPturk ! I would steal that chinchilla doe if I was closer. Good luck with all your new space for birdies!

Thanks @igorsMistress ! I am really really enjoying both their personalities and their....relative meatiness compared to quail. :drool

People talk up Flemish like no other and I was certain it must be mostly hype but he is the SWEETEST, most laid back, most people-oriented of my buns by far. I am in love. There is a decent chance I am going to eat everyone but him in a year or two and start over with purebreds.

The one that wants the least to do with me? The half rex....talk about moody.....apparently even the flemish half can't combat it...

Turns out the box I used for my show table for began to buckle under his weight so this pic isn't as accurate as I would've liked. He was very good and the attention span was waning, so, another day.

Still, I can kind of tell a couple things!

He needs better bone and size like every blue flem in existence, but I'm not a good judge of how he stacks up to his peers yet. My guess is better considering he's got fawn/sandy lines in his pedigree.

His color is rough. I don't he will ever GC or even place with it unless he molts out better. It's not a surprise, he's from a 'mixed' background which femmie people have strokes about for this reason. But I think he has a pretty good shape, which is more important, and will be a fine starter.

Needs more length, esp in shoulders, but only has to make 20" for senior class and he's already 13-14". He has 4 months to put on the extra.

I like his butt. I think he's going to have good depth there. Hips are a little narrow but might improve. A little turnout on the feet but that's not a huge fault in Flemish. Need to make him run and see if he tracks okay.

The rollback on his fur is not great but I can't tell if that's a baby thing.

He has a nice head and I like his ears when they're not folded. You can see the rusty bleeding here real strong though.

He's 3 months and 3 weeks old! I need to weigh him again. Hoping he's broken 7 lbs.

My initial goal for my meat-mutt project was to have them up in the 15lb+ range....after doing a lot of research it turns out that is simply not compatible with rex fur and good hock health. So my new goal is more like 10-12 lbs, which this guy will be pretty perfect for just counteracting the 8-9lb rexes in the mix. I'm going to be working with American Blues pretty heavily to help improve shape and color.
