Introducing Mr. Blue Buns!

Turns out the box I used for my show table for began to buckle under his weight so this pic isn't as accurate as I would've liked. He was very good and the attention span was waning, so, another day.

Still, I can kind of tell a couple things!

He needs better bone and size like every blue flem in existence, but I'm not a good judge of how he stacks up to his peers yet. My guess is better considering he's got fawn/sandy lines in his pedigree.

His color is rough. I don't he will ever GC or even place with it unless he molts out better. It's not a surprise, he's from a 'mixed' background which femmie people have strokes about for this reason. But I think he has a pretty good shape, which is more important, and will be a fine starter.

Needs more length, esp in shoulders, but only has to make 20" for senior class and he's already 13-14". He has 4 months to put on the extra.

I like his butt. I think he's going to have good depth there. Hips are a little narrow but might improve. A little turnout on the feet but that's not a huge fault in Flemish. Need to make him run and see if he tracks okay.

The rollback on his fur is not great but I can't tell if that's a baby thing.

He has a nice head and I like his ears when they're not folded. You can see the rusty bleeding here real strong though.

He's 3 months and 3 weeks old! I need to weigh him again. Hoping he's broken 7 lbs.

My initial goal for my meat-mutt project was to have them up in the 15lb+ range....after doing a lot of research it turns out that is simply not compatible with rex fur and good hock health. So my new goal is more like 10-12 lbs, which this guy will be pretty perfect for just counteracting the 8-9lb rexes in the mix. I'm going to be working with American Blues pretty heavily to help improve shape and color.
Make sure you check toenails before show!!!! I’ll check in my book to see if it’s a DQ, but in American Blues it’s a DQ for white toenails! Im a rather young shower (still in youth) and I’ve gotten thrown off the table quite rudely by a judge for ONE white spot on one of my bucks very inner toenails on his left foot. Do you have the standard of perfection?

I do, and it is a DQ in flemish too. He doesn't have any yet but I wont discount the possibility of him breaking one down the road. I'm trying to trim them regularly, and he's not on wire anymore, so hopefully that helps minimize the risk.
:fl

What an awesome breed you've picked! I love them. I am getting an F1 rex/AmBlue doe soon and have been toying around with getting a purebred at the same time. Sucks about that judge, though, I'm sorry that happened. I'm sure people miss things all the time, no need to be rude about :/

I don't know if the timing is actually going to work out for any shows this year. There's one next weekend, but I'm busy. The next one close by is the ARBA convention, and I really don't want to do any cooped shows. And I think he'll work out for junior and intermediate class but since I'm only expecting him to mature around the minimum weights for seniors my guess is there's going to be a gap where he's not eligible. :barnie

I have sooooo many weight problems with Americans!! All my bucks have super fine bone! I have this AWESOME doe that’ll have kits on the 14 but my buck is going to ruin the babies! It’s so frustrating! I’m in Western Indiana and there is a guy in Ohio that has a really good buck he’ll give me for $50. We’ve just gotta get a good time... I have a feeling with that buck I can FINALLY get some awesome Americans to throw on the table!

I’ve been doing rabbits for half my life and I love going to open shows, whether it be my buddies mom packing the both of us and 20 buns in the car at 4 in the morning (after an EPIC sleepover where he had to sleep outside bc he lost Rock Paper Scissors...) to travel across the state to Fort Wayne or just hoping in the car with my sisters to go to one 30 minutes away. It’s a really good experience and I always meet new breeders and see all kinds of new breeds!

We had fun outside today. It was hard to keep him out of my lap long enough to get good photos. He is such a snuggler! He knows he has to be cute to get back in my good graces after peeing in his food bowl (it has begun). :sick

I am really pleased because most of his off-color bleeding has disappeared. His coat's a little patchy but I think that's pretty normal for his age.

And my two little rex. I am going to sell the dilute tricolor buck but he is super cute. I had fun taking sale pics today.

I am definitely keeping his sister! She is nice. Not happy at me for chasing her into the potty corner with my phone, but nice.

Mr. Blue is getting a Mrs. Blue! :ya

I am so excited. I am picking her up on the 21st. She is a fully pedigreed blue Flemish from unrelated, all-self, 17-18 lb lines. She should really play on his strengths and provide a counterpoint to his weaknesses. And she is CUTE.

I have to drive 300 miles round trip to get her, but it will be so worth it.

He wont be ready to breed until the end of this year, and it'll be middle of next summer for her, but then I will flood you all with baby pics.

Actually, I will flood you with baby pics anyways before then, just different babies.

Or, how CC learned she needs to bunny-proof the yard before walks. My new Flemish baby has more personality than the rest of my rabbits rolled into one but also more energy for mischief!

Try to trap me?! Imma dig out.

Mom ur tryin to trick me this is a ribbon I bet I could chew through it.

Ooh, this also definitely looks like something I should bite.

How did you know zip ties were my favorite?

The troublemaker is safely back inside with an actually edible treat and appears remorselessly adorable. :lau

Bonus Princess Fiona, who is still not sure about this outdoor thing.
