(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
A few months ago I knew absolutely nothing about raising chickens. Then the lady of the house bought six chicks and asked me to make a small brooder out of a 40 gallon storage tote followed by a bit larger wooden one a couple weeks later. I stole the designs from folks on the internet because I don’t have a creative bone in my body. Then I immediately had to start building a coop and 16 foot run. I had no idea how much thought went into building a proper hen house, but I learned a lot about chickens in the process.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Six
(3) What breeds do you have?
I don’t know. Three are black and three are brown.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I do not like birds at all in general. Never have. They’ve always creeped me out a little bit, but watching these girls grow up has been good entertainment. I don’t ever get tired of watching them. They’re like the six stooges. I know they’re really smart in some ways but they are also pretty stupid in others and I can’t help being fascinated by their ridiculous behavior.

Building stuff, gardening, yard work, solving problems.
