Investing More In American Dominiques

Pics
Two small flocks now in barn. Looks like two sawhorses in parallel we be needed to provide sufficient roosting capacity per pen. Another pen will be used to house American Game pullets as they will serve as broodies for older game hens used in line breeding nest spring. Linebreeding back too female side, especially once hens start getting a little age on them requires broodies as refactory period for older birds increases while egg production tends to decrease when they incubate and rear their own offspring.

I left a pen with a complete roof. Last night it contained nine American Dominiques and three Missouri Dominiques. By 0800 all Missouri Dominiques got out while no American Domminiques got out. Selective efforts with Missouri Dominiques paying off with respect to capacity for flight.

Another point worth noting is white interior of barn has made seeing of contents much better, especially at night when aided by the spotlight. I can actually see rows of chickens from 300+ feet away.

With complete roof, how did they get out?

Deer netting. Complete needs reinforcement, Netting intended only to block owls that probably will not even challenge it if they can see the netting, The chickens are substantially heavier and able to hit in a manner I did not expect would be stressing netting. The netting if it allows clambering becomes an aid to escapment.

It is rather amazing what you learn after building.

This summer, my dh built me a new run out of woven wire, I suppose 6x6 openings, a couple of times when I went down in the morning, a young bird would be out. I thought that perhaps I had not got her rounded up the night before, but then I got to wondering if she flew out.

Last week, as my son in law and son were installing my coop, they saw one fly out. So I am thinking of adding the netting. This would help keep wild birds out too.

Barn is proving to be a resonating chamber for roosters. That will need to be changed.

Sorry, but this gave me a huge laugh. Talk about something I would never have though of, but I can imagine the echo...echo...echo...off the walls, with multiple roosters going at it....sorry, still laughing.
