Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

HI everyone,

I need an opinion...does the chicken on the bottom of this photo look like an Iowa Blue?

Thanks! the top girl is a Delaware for sure....


the photo above was taken two weeks ago, but the ones below were just taken of her

we actually adopted the two pullets from a person who has Icelandics, Iowa Blues, and Delawares...
so it is certain she is one of those breeds.
She is about 17 weeks old in the above photo.

Hmm, Icelandic, Delaware and Iowa Blue... sounds like Jake in Michigan? If that's where she came from, then she is an Iowa Blue from my line. She looks like my birds.

HI Kari! I am so glad you responded. Jake has rehomed to us two of his pullets but the one did not look like a Delaware at all. I am ecstatic I have one of your birds! this one must have come from his shipment from you. She has darker slate legs and gets more white on her head, neck as you can see. What do you think of her so far? We love her and am thinking about the three Birchens he has left (two pullets and the cockerel). We personally like the silver pencil coloring however...

we have made preparations to keep a separate coop for the Iowa Blues.

Our little Iowa has been laying eggs for two days now, I wasn't sure it was her until we took her out of quarantine to get fresh air and grass. She had her second egg while in that pen. It is just like the one we found on Saturday and in the middle of my avatar photo

The silver color is the "right" one, so to speak. I only had a black rooster so that is what I used with my silver hens. The black birds Jake has could carry the silver gene, so if you got them and put them all together you could eventually produce silver. It's good to see she is laying for you! I love the breed, they have such character Your girl is lovely and she should get lighter as she gets older. She seems OK about being held for the photo shoot, so I can tell Jake spoiled her rotten.

LOL, we were just so perplexed when a friend of ours told us "that is not a Delaware"...she is pretty experienced in chickens so then Brett and I started to look at the other birds Jake said he had. Then we came across the Iowa pictures. Brett was so excited he ran out to the pole barn and woke up Sweetie, brought her in the house so I could take some pictures to post

. She is a good sport but I didn't trust her to just stand there on the guest bed without Brett keeping a grip on her! Brett fell in love with her coloring as soon as he saw her and now is going to get the rest from Jake next week. Jake did say the cockerel represents the silver and is beautiful. We will post pictures and get some opinions on the cockerel and if we need a "silver" we will be looking for another boy. Isn't the SP cockerel better to have even when over Birchen females? I am not sure what color the Birchen's are that Jake has, but he tells us they are Birchen. I really only want one other rooster here, I already have a very nice, gentleman EE roo-very sweet and courteous.

She was a good girl to pose for her "photo shoot" , & refrained from pooping on me or in the house for her quick trip carrying her in then back outside.

The main clue with my line on the Silver males is the white on the ends their wing feathers. They also tend to have a very silvery breast. This guy is overkill with white everywhere. I have some of his babies growing up now.



Pullet


The birchen/black roosters will only have black wings.







Now, the Smoky/duckwing roosters will also have white, but I don't think Jake had any of those. Those chicks are born yellow and are also considered an "off" color.



The females look a lot different.
