Irregardless of what you think....

For those who didn't figure it out -

Irregardless is a term meaning in spite of or anyway, that has caused controversy since it first appeared in the early twentieth century. It is generally listed in dictionaries as "incorrect" or "nonstandard".

The reason the word 'irregardless' is such a pet peeve to some- and I am one of them- is because it's redundant.

The base word is 'regard,' meaning care, but you're using it with the suffix 'less.' Now your word means 'without care.' Now if you add on 'ir' at the beginning, you have just reversed the meaning of the word, so it actually means you care a lot about whatever you're purporting to care nothing about....

The word one generally intends to use in this case is 'regardless.'

Now don't get me started on 'couldn't care less' vs. 'could care less.'

You need to start a new Barbara Manatee thread, because I can feel my back crawl and my jaw lock every time I read the title line on this one.

While we're at it, what's the deal with flammable and inflammable? For some reason I think they mean the same thing?

By the way, the last time a thread like this started cutting on people who can't spell well or don't think too highly of grammar rules, a good BYC member left this forum for good, and a good many were offended. The thread was closed and disappeared.
