Not at all, you should be able to tell on some of them at least. The ones with the bigger combs are for sure males, the others would be a bit more difficult. Not all the males will develop a larger comb early, but most of them should.

Were they all orange-ish with stripes as chicks? If so, then you do have a bunch of golden comet pullets
