Is a heat source needed?

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your gal Trayc.... Having elderly pets die is like losing a family member, I have 4 elderly horses here and I dread the day I need to make decisions on them - 3 of them were born here!

All we can do for our pets is ensure they are fed and happy, which you have been doing in spades it sounds like.

And newbies like myself look for other peoples ways to see what works for others. But other things like using a heat source i know aren’t good for birds.
Pointing out, not only can heat sources burn down a coop. It can also cause a lot more moisture when it snows and the snow melts, causing birds to have respiratory issues

Yea and she got answers. Someone saying “i use a heat source for blah blah blah in my coop” and i can reply with the fact that it’s unsafe. Also it’s nice to give others advice to what can happen

So sorry about your sweet hen, @Trayc72. It’s hard to lose them. I am providing some radiant heat for my older hens by using a Sweeter Heater. It doesn’t warm the coop up, but it will take the edge off of the cold-especially for the older hens that seem to have a harder time in colder weather. They have to physically be under it to feel warmth. It’s all sealed-no dust, dander can get in, and it is very safe. If the power goes out, the birds will still be acclimated to the weather, since it only warms them to take the edge of the cold off. I hope this helps you in the future. Edited for spelling

Well I admittedly kind of glazed over the fact the original poster was talking about an elderly bird.
Well...
THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING.
That bird needs a diaper, a permanate hand carved solid oak roost in front of the fireplace and three gourmet meals a day approved by chef Ramsay.


Yeah I'm sure as they get older the cold is probably harder on them.
Just like it is us.
But I still stand by my opinion that it will be even that much harder if something were to come up where the heat source was unavailable once the bird got used to having it.

Just checked out the Sweeter Heater, looks interesting, but the price is crazy! Over $300, I think my Cozy Coop was less than $100.

I got the 40 inch-at somewhere around 150.00. I don’t know what product is 300.00. The have several lengths.
