The New England Bantam Club, Inc. is a non-profit organization based in Massachusetts but serving all of New England and eastern NY. It has been in existence for about 78 years. I joined the club in Oct. 1997. At the time I was told there were about 70-90 members, down from several hundred in the 1950s. After a couple years on the sidelines, I began to get more active in the club. In 2000 I took over the duties of the newsletter in Feb. and began promoting the club at fairs, posting flyers, and arranging a Sept. Swap & Sell in Lancaster, MA. I became a trustee in 2001. By 2007, the ranks has increased to about 220 members. Discouraged because of problems in getting the newsletters out in a timely manner, I resigned as editor the end of 2007. The spring of 2008 we discovered my wife was suffering from Bird Breeders Lung and I got rid of all my poultry. I had been publishing 10 newsletters a year but after I resigned, newsletters became sporadic, only a few each year. The club's web site languished. At one time, membership fell to only 40-50 members. I remained a member and in 2011 became club secretary and resumed editorship duties. We are back to publishing 10 newsletters a year, held a fall show in Middleboro, MA, and, new, a summer show in Brockton, in Aug. This spring's show will also be in Brockton, as the National Guard Armory in Middleboro is not available due to returning troops. We sponsored two swaps last year and two poultry seminars in Easton, MA. Our membership at the end of 2011 was 118 members. However, we have vacancies on our board and would love to have volunteers step forward.
