Is anyone else a compulsive Cookbook Collector?

That reminds me! I had a recipe for a simple white sauce written on a paper towel stashed in my recipe box for the longest time. Every time I used it, I thought to myself that I better transfer it to something better before it becomes illegible. Finally, that's exactly what I did, so now it's still in my recipe box but written on a piece of notebook paper. It should be on an index card, but I'm not always that organized!

I have a real treasure: it's a tiny handmade, hand written late 1700's recipe book. I found it inside another more modern cookery book that I bought in a junk shop. I didn't realise it was there when I purchased it because there were a lot of old recipe cuttings from magazines tucked between the pages. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to see this faded old brown handwriting -- some of it is very faded & water-stained now.I feel very honoured to own this bit of the past.

I used to have lots of cookbooks but like recipes even more. I have a whole drawer in a file cabinet filled with folders of recipes. Some have been cut out of mags or newspapers, some are from friends, other copied from books borrowed from the library that only had one or two recipes to try. I have started culling them, however as I really don't need 10 recipes for the same square, cake, etc especially when I have one recipe of that kind that I use all the time.

Oh, no you don't have a problem! As Kim_NC says, you are our hero!

This thread prompted me to count how many in my shelves right now - 196 - about half of which are produced by church, civic and school groups. Have several boxes in storage (long story...) so am not sure of the total number owned. Most of these were collected over the years before I got internet service. Now, I just look online because it's quicker.

My most prized cookbook was my grandmother's. Watkins Cook Book by The J. R. Watkins Co., Winona, Minn. It appears to be from the third printing - as the foreword letter says "The Watkins New Cook Book of 200 pages issued in June 1936.....the first printing of 175,000 copies was exhausted within three months. A second printing of 500,000 copies was distributed within eighteen months. ....Being completely out of Cook Books, another printing was necessary and it was decided to print an enlarged book and hundreds of new recipes have been added to keep step with the advance in culinary science." (This book contains 264 pages of recipes) There is no actual print date in the book; but added to the ones Watkins company published, my granny wrote on the inside covers, the first and last pages (blanks) and the margins of many pages, and on lots of scraps of paper and added significantly more recipes through the years. It is tattered and splattered and probably no one but me would want it. But I do use it, especially around holiday times to make dishes she always brought to family dinners.

lol... no but I'm a compulsive cook! Mmmmmm

Check out Bakespace.com Tons of recipes, and you can talk to the people who list their recipes there.
