Is anyone else hatching all winter long?

I have a Rroyal Palm turkey that just refuses to quit laying eggs..

I tried for 3 years to get royal palms started.. the first two years were a disaster// This summer I finally got a turkey raised and she started laying eggs.. she also hatched a half dozen and within a week a young fox got into the pen and killed all of the babies and worked mother over pretty badly too.. in about 2 weeks after that she began laying again.. I hatched about a dozen more of which I have 9 lef.. then she quit laying for the season,, or so I thought.. a few weeks ago she started laying again
This time we started putting the egg under chicken clucks because it being so close to fall we figured she would quit soon..

well,,,we have turkeys hatching about every other day.. we take them from the clucks after they are dried off and put them into the starter brooder and then transfer to the big brooder pen after about a week..

we have 11 young ones, as of this morning and the chickens are still setting on 20 more eggs... and yes, mom turkey is still laying an egg every day in the window well.

the answer to your question is yes.
as long as she keeps laying we will
keep setting.. all winter if we have to..LOL

needmorechickens! :

My last hatching eggs of the season will be on day 1 tomorrow. There are 15 wheaten marans eggs and timbofarms is hatching them and we are going to spit the chicks!

I said that about...oh...3 or 4 settings ago!! I just CAN'T throw the eggs away!! And since I have a broody that is hatching right now, why can't I? I will have the brooder running most of the winter anyway, as I have no coop yet to put them in, so why not?

I do plan on selling some though!!

Not crazy at all..

I plan to incubate all winter too, figure I can get some more stock before hatching egg season

I've got to try out my new incubator, so I will be putting some in this weekend. Wish me luck.

I'm planning on hatching all winter also. I want to have my flock all built up so they're laying or close to it come spring. I'm also planning on selling some of the chicks as we go and selling some of the pullets (Roosters are going in the freezer or will be sold) in the spring if I overestimate our coop/run. Though I'm already working on Silkieville...a whole other section of miny coops just for the silkies/banties.

Here's the big question...who's hatching through the winter...that will be able to stop in the spring!

Also, how many of our breeders here are going to be willing to sell/ship during the winter? I was soooo bummed when I started seeing "Last batch" or "Last to be sold" until spring....who's going to feed this addiction for us?????

I'm going to try to hatch all winter. I have seven 2 1/2 week olds, one just hatched, and one is halfway out. I have a few eggs set out to be traded for hay for the rabbits, but I also have 9 others ready to be put in the incubator tonight, plus whatever is laid today.

I just seperated my five RIR hens and my RIR roo away from the rest of the flock and put extra light over everyone to keep them laying. I have three broody silkies (which only leaves two to lay!) that I can use if I need them. My parents aren't so happy about having chicks inside right now, but hopefully I'll be able to get the brooders up and running in our outdoor storage building soon and can keep them out there.

I'm hoping to have as many pullets and point-of-lay hens available this spring. This past spring, mixed hens (2-3 years old) were going for $20 each, just because they were laying and it was spring. I'm going to ask for $10 each until they lay, then $15 each. I'll probaby end up keeping a few too, lol.

At least I know I'm not the only person crazy, ahem, "smart" enough to hatch through the winter, lol.

If I can keep getting egg, I can see myself hatching all winter. Right now I have two incubators full, one will hopefully hatch out this weekend and I have eggs enough coming to fill it again. After that I will just keep watching the boards for breeds I want. Mine won't stay in the house, they will either go to the greenhouse or to outdoor cages that I will fit with lights. It is not usually terribly cold here in Georgia.
