Is anyone else waiting for a chick order? CHICK PICS!!

My babies are here and all healthy and happy. They've finally decided to nap, so I'm taking a break from watching them. I'm not sure who is who yet but on my feather-footed ones, they gave me a list. I have 2 buff brahmas, 2 partridge cochins, 2 black cochins, 2 black langshans and 2 gold laced cochins. There's also 15 Ameracauna's that I've been told are EE's. They're all so cute. Pics in a bit.

Well, they arrived safely! I awoke yesterday morning at 6:21AM to the cheerful voice of the post office clerk, telling me I had a box of chickens!

I opened the box to find that 2 of the bantams had not survived the journey, but the rest look great. Ideal did include 1 extra, so I am happy with my 24 bantams for $24.75!

On the full-size side of the box, one of the supposed 12 RIR pullets has a suspiciously large comb and is bigger than her sisters, but big girls need love too, so until she starts crowing...

Of the 24 bantams, there are
11 feather-legged
13 non feather-legged

After getting my 49 babies beak-dipped in water and started eating, I sat and watched happily for about an hour. There is nothing like watching baby chicks! :)

Now I am the proud parent of:
11 Black Australorp Pullets
2 Black Australorp Roosters and
24 Assorted Bantams (11 feather-legged and 13 non feather-legged)
(not to mention the 12 Rhode Island Red Pullets I will be fostering)
6 lovely Easter Egger Pullets that are laying nicely
2 tanks full of tropical fish
Smoky, a VERY NEEDY Shepherd mix rescue dog!

We made it 8 days.... When I got up this morning 1 chick was lying off in a corner alone as far from the heat lamp as possible. When I picked her up she was icy cold, but alive. I stuck her in my shirt to warm her up and went to get an eyedropper to try to get some water in her. Little baby died within a couple minutes.

I'm sure the cold killed her, but no idea why she didn't get under the lamp, there's plenty of room. I was so proud making it a whole week and not losing a one.

Aww poor little thing, I'm sure it wasn't anything you did, sometimes they just don't make it. I lost one of my cornish about 30 minutes after I bought him home...

Just look at the bright side- all the others are healthy and happy!!!

My chicks, from Ideal, are coming right before t-giving. My 2 yo grandson is coming for our traditional cookie making day, and I wanted to have a few little ones (but not too little) for him to love on. They are due to arrive about the 19th of November. I ordered 3 rare breeds, 5 surprise special, and 4 California white --- all are pullets. I've always used McMurray before but decided to go with a Texas company since it's closer to San Antonio. I, too, have the PO call me when they arrive....I can usually hear them chirping in the background.

Oh my cow! I don't have the time to be posting on this, but I look forward to reading it so much and I am sad when there are no new posts, so I guess I better post.

I got back home today and all my babies are fine, I guess my chicken-sitter did know what he was doing.

HOWEVER, about 2/3 of my babies had poopy-butt, so I spent my afternoon providing a bidet service to my babies! Wow, some of them were completely clogged and could not poop! Poor kids! Anyone else having this problem?

Like a good parent, I kept cloth instead of pine shavings for the first 3 days, but when I put them on shavings today, all they do is eat the bedding! Anyone else having this problem? The bantams are doing it much more than their full-size sisters, so I separated them (it was overdue, the others are 4-5 times their size and some of the tiny bantams were getting trampled), and put the bedding in the fullsize brooder only. The bantams are on fabric until further notice!

I am so pleased with my Ideal Bantam Special, they really took the time to give me a nice variety! I have 2 or 3 white silkies, a buff silkie, a partridge silkie and 2 silver seabrights! That is all I have identified so far, but I need to take pictures and see what you all think.

Thanks to all of you bragging about your bantam surprise and all of the pictures and being instigators, I just ordered the bantam surprise from Ideal.

Hope the DH doesn't smack me!

Hey everyone,

So all I started with 26 bantam babies and now I'm down to 25. One of my silkies died. We aren't sure why but it was always very mellow and not very lively. The rest are doing great and I ended up with some frizzles! I noticed the funny feathers are soon as they started growing in. I plan to sell some of the chicks when they are older, I have a few that I just don't like. I was going to order another 25 but they are sold out.

Oh well. I will have to keep my eye out for more specials.

GothChick - My bantam order was for 25, Ideal included 1 extra, but 2 of the Silkies died en rout. My 5 silkies (2 white, 2 buff, 1 partridge) that made the journey do not seem to be as energetic as the other bantams. The silkies have also had more problems with a dirty butt!

If you REALLY want 25 more assorted bantams, Murray McMurray has open availability for their bantam special. It is 51.75 for 25 of them and you get a FREE RARE CHICK (several have reported getting an E.E. rooster). I have heard mixed things about Murray McMurray, but I myself am very happy with my 6 Easter Egger pullets that came from Murray McMurray via my local feed store in March.

If anyone wants, I have a coupon code $5 off an order of $50 or more for Murray McMurray, PM me if you want it. Not a big deal, they send them out when you join their mailing list, but if you have already used yours or do not want to wait for yours to arrive.

I am cleaning the brooder 2-3 times a day, they seem fascinated with pecking at the poo and pooing in the water!

IdealisticRoo- I have ordered from McMurray a few times. I have always had pretty good luck with them. I just think they are more expensive sometimes. I normally just keep my eye out for specials and order a bunch of chicks then. I have a little business going where I order large orders of chicks and then split them up and sell them to people looking for small numbers of chicks. We have had a lot of people interested now that many cities are allowing chickens as backyard pets. Soooo I need to find chicks when they are on sale so that I can actually make a little bit of a profit for myself. I have a current order of 25 standard pullets I am raising for my uncle and then once they are gone I will need to get another group.
