Is anyone hatching on the 15th?

lovin'mychicks :

You guys are making me so anxious to get home and check out my little ones!!! It is times like this that I am glad I spent extra for a bator with a fully viewable top!! I have 4 d'uccle eggs that I hope will start piping tonight (day 19!) they usually hatch on day 20 for me.

Really on day 19 O.O
what are your techniques?? im on day 22 i can still see them in the egg they have a little more to fill up

What are you hatching??

I try to leave the eggs along as much as possible (which is hard with two kids wanting to see them EVERY day!)

I warm up the bator for a few hours...

Keep temp around 99.5 humidity around 30-40 (I live in Alabama and this usually requires me to add little water)...

Mark and set the eggs...

Manually turn them 3x's daily...

Candle on day 4 to check for veins...

Candle on day 10-12 to look for movement (I can usually make out "parts" by this time)

Continue to turn the eggs until day 18...

I know they say not to open the bator after that but we do. I think because we live in such a humid climate and our bator is in a place where the temp stays constant it does not hurt them. So,

I check for rocking eggs and pips on days 20-21.

My bantams usually hatch in the evening or over night on day 20.

I use a strong LCD light to candle with. I like to put the air sac end toward the light a rotate slowly, when the beam moves through the air sac you can see movement and parts really well.

When my husband came home he chuckled at the tiny pips - from my phone call he was expecting to see heads and beaks poking out I guess!! He went out in the garage to paint the bottom of the brooder floor to make it less absorbent, and as soon as he left I heard my first little "HI MOM"!! LOL!

NOW I understand all the excitement!!! AND now I know I won't be getting too much sleep tonight!

my first death...I knew KNEW... that I should have had a 3rd baby from my eggs yesterday or today..I set 3 of my own and all 3 were moving and pipping. The last one stopped moving-I hadn't seen it pip yet so I waited and waited...I got home and decided to turn the egg over and sure enough there was a pip...no noise and I knew something was wrong. I started breaking the shell with tweezers--I saw a dried hunk of blood on the outside and thought oh no...as I broke it open, I noticed that It was fully formed and beautiful, but very dead-I hate to even say that-It was bleeding from the beak. I'm not sure what the sharp thing is on the beak thats hlps them break through but it was missing and his top beak was bleeding-I think it broke it's beak trying to get out and it bled out in the egg. My youngest DD has been crying for over an hour because she had to see it-I knew it was a part of life and had to show her and explain-survival of the fittest-I wish I would have done something last night when it was still alive-he was big...the only thing that makes me feel a little better is that the yolk wasn't fully absorbed either-so who knows if it would have made it even if I did get him out last night? OH yes, out of the 2 that hatched last night-1 has spraddle leg and I put a forest gump type brace on him -like the BYC site says too. My kids have named him Forest-his girl is Jenny and they are hoping for a black or dark chick to call Bubba! Lord help us-can you tell what is our favorite movie???

On a good note I have 3 more pips-1 silkie-1 golden comet-1 who knows it's a surprise-the eggs I got were not marked from one BYcer so it's a big mix of pure chickens---I'll keep you guys posted--good luck

Update* as of 8 pm I now have 4 pipping-1 of them is zipping! yeah long night for me and I have a week from He!! at work this week and can't stay home anymore!

I've got 8 which have pipped, but other than that - no action. It just hit me they really aren't due until Friday... Is it normal to pip a bit early and then just "chill" for a while, or might this indicate drowning??? Worry???

no you are good-just watch and relax-better yet go take a long bath! 8 pipped -awesome...it may take a day to get out...I hve one that pipped about 5 hours ago and it just started zipping-the other three haven't changed -just little pokes is all...how long has it been since they pipped? oops and yes they can pip early-mine did today they aren't due until tomorrow -really late tomorrow night so almost day 19 1/2 days so far---early yes maybe they will take another day to come out-they need to absorb the yolk-from what I read, when they pip and push around in there it triggers something to make their bodies absorb the yolk faster-so you wouldn't want to rush it anyway...
