Hey y'all, I'm hoping for some opinions on the gender of my baby chick Jamal. I know it's way too early to tell for sure, but I'm curious to see what more experienced chicken keepers think. I'm calling her a girl for now because I really hope she is... I cannot have any more roosters.

Jamal is three weeks and five days old in these photos. She hatched on September 22nd. Her father was a Cochin bantam, and her mother was a full-sized Rhode Island Rex mix with a rose comb. Jamal has her father's feathered legs, but her mother's comb and size. She looks like she's going to be huge.

I took these photos yesterday afternoon, and even this morning, her comb looks a little redder than it did yesterday. I'm not used to sexing rose comb chicks and there's no other chicks here to compare her growth to.

I congratulate you on excellent photos that really show the detail we need to make our gender guesses. Sometimes all we get is a photo of a chick in the blurry distance.

I would say Jamal is a pullet, but it really is premature. If Jamal is a cockerel, the comb will turn yellowish, then yellow-orange before it gets to reddish around six weeks. It will also develop rather noticeably. Watch for that to happen. If the comb remains the pale, washed out pink it now is, and it stays low to her head for a while, you have a pullet for sure.

You have a bald eagle. It won't develop a comb.

(Just kidding. Nice coloration. Weird, but pretty.)

How old is Jamal? It has way less comb than my almost 6 week old SLWs, so my guess would be pullet.

Edit: Now I see how old it is. Did it just feather fast? It seems to have more "adult" feathers than afore mentioned almost 6 week olds.

A lot of people say she looks like an eagle right now. Who knows? Maybe an eagle egg got snuck into the nest.

She feathered weirdly fast. I could see the little pin-looking things that form the base of feathers on her wing the day she hatched. By one week old, she had most of her wing feathers.

Comb is still getting redder by the day... Hoping for the best.

Today I got some new pictures of baby Jamal. She is four weeks and five days old in these photos. She's got all her feathers now except for her head, which those are still growing in.

I think I see wattles coming in, and some suspiciously pointy feathers around her neck... Please tell me I'm seeing things!
