I'm glad they aren't all that way. That park was my only experience with turkeys, so I'll admit to a small sample size. They really were aggressive, though. I'm not easily intimidated by animals, but I would actually fear for my children's safety when those things started heading for us! I was so glad when they decided to get rid of them.
I have a lot of roos that live together on the farm, only 2 try it with me and I raised them from chicks. i even have a rooster pen - all roos of different breeds. If any other roo gets nasty with me... in the pen he goes until the older roos put him in his place....
I was absolutely shocked when my sweet little Silkie roo started dancing toward my ankle first thing Monday morning! I decided to stand still and see what happened, so other than making sure my feet were well planted, I didn't move.
He was dancing for the hen in the run behind me! My two Silkie brothers LOVE them some LF hens! I have only recently set them up with their "own" harem, but they still call to and dance for their old girl friends!
Talk about relief!
I dealt with a couple of butt headed roosters when I was a little kid. "Brutus" was the worst. He was Mom's favorite, but after Dad watched Brutus run across the yard to attack my face when I fell off my bike no where near his hens, Dad announced "Brutus is next on the chopping block.". He was good with dumplings.
Well,. We lost our awesome BR head roo to a hawk,.and we had two sweet, sweet BA younger roos and we wondered the same thing,. so far their disposition has held true,. they have shown no aggression in any fashion. They both stepped up to take a lead and are still getting along with each other,..
We do cull for temperament in our breeding,. We believe it makes a difference. I hope yours stays sweet,. there is a good chance for it.
As far as Silkies being aggressive little,. "an ugly word" ,. I have known bad tempered birds of all breeds and many sweet Silkies,. I think breeding, environment and health can all have something to do with the temperament of animals.
Roo's like Brutus need to end up with dumplings,.. or around here,.. in gumbo!
