Is Cornish X genectically modified

Thanks everyone. Maybe GM isnt how I wanted to describe it. Maybe not natural is a better choice of words. I do feed organic feed to my meat chickens. We try to stay away from GM as much as possible. Its hard but its a passion.

What is not 'natural' about breeding the best to the best?

When you ignore the negative traits in favor of an extreme outcome.

That is a valid point.

I get tired of the "its not natural" cry when people cuss/discuss Cornish Crosses. There are many things in our world that are not natural yet we enjoy them: 2 lb heritage tomatoes, jersey cows that milk 14,000 lb per year, Australorps that lay 300 eggs per year, etc.

Depends on what one means by "best".

My birds are not only the best natural specimens, they are SUPERIOR ones ... happily residing in freezer camp awaiting their turn to become honored guests on the Bar B Que grill !!!

Yeah, if you're having problems with Cornish X's, you are doing something wrong. I raise them in batches of 75, and between culls and early, unexplained deaths, I lost two in my last batch, and I think three in the batch before that.

As for "natural" food, good luck. If selective breeding/hybridization means food isn't natural, then there is probably literally nothing you will find on this earth that is "natural."

Breeding these for meat is no different than breeding pet
breeds such as silkies or frizzled that cannot fly, perch, or run from predators,
egg layers with no broodiness, crested breeds that cannot
see predators, feathered legs that prohibit running quickly etc....

I'm going to get a few this spring (like 5 or 6) from the feed store to try out.
