Seller made a joke that he is "French".
I'm guessing some mixed color line of Maran (IDK how chicken genetics work.)
Guy seemed to have no mixed breed roosters, so presuming this guy is not a mixed breed...?
No, not a marans...and it is a mixed breed. Marans are white legged and clean faced....your boy is bearded with yellow legs. He *may* have marans in his genetics....marans are used in many olive egger breedings
One other side note, when using the term "French" with regards to marans it refers to the standard for the marans breed, one part of which is feathered legs....your bird, from what can be seen, appears clean legged.
Did the seller SAY this bird was marans or was that your guess?
Oh no, seller didn't make any specific breed claims and I wasn't concerned about such. I simply needed a huge and hopefully intimidating but gentle rooster (everyone's dream, no?)
This far, he's super docile. Almost concerned that he's TOO docile!!!
Stuck him in coop in a wire crate late last night. Kept everyone cooped later than usual.
Have teeny bantam chicks running about in there, wanted to be assured that the rooster wouldn't bother them.
Bantams were chilling next to him through the bars this morning, so I went ahead and opened the crate.
Well, he didn't come out. I had to pick him up and carry him outside to the hens. He did nice dances and tidbitting, couple hens pecked at him, that was that! He didn't necessarily stay with the hens, but not all my hens stay together either when ranging.
Had to lock up flock before I left today. Took a good half hour to tire him out so I could get him back into coop, but again, as soon as I had him he just let me hold and pet him. Even manhandled him to show him the nipple waterer, guy never flinched.
