Is incubation time for eggs the same when they're under a broody hen as when they're in an incubator

Such adorable pics!!

Where's a big hungry stray cat when you need one?
lol.png
LOL. Yeah, those sticky traps are mean but when it comes to rats I think whatever works, use it!
I don't use nets to catch anyone. I've spoiled mine so much they all pretty much come when I call.
tongue.png
They even come running if I call the cats to eat. Haha, I holler out "kitty, kitty, kitties" and cats AND chickens come a running. I call the chickens "chick, chick, chickens", so I think it's because both calls sound the same. Every once in a while the big hens get ornery tho and won't come but the second I toss some food out they get over it real quick! Everyone around here is like a pack of vultures when it comes to something to eat! The little chicks are even picking up the big ones bad habits! As soon as they see me with a bowl or the worm can they swarm me and ALL try to fly up on me or jump into my lap when I sit down in the coop.
D.gif
Vultures. It's my own fault tho I guess. My youngest daughter is just mad about bugs and stuff so I've actually got a can in the fridge that's packed with worms she finds(
sickbyc.gif
sounds gross, I know) and that's the "worm can", the chickens go nuts for em! Your chickens sound like they're a bit wilder than mine! Probably because yours get to run loose more, lucky birds.
Those little chicks mite not like having to go back in their cage but at least you don't have to worry about anymore mishaps that way! We don't want anymore bad news!!!
fl.gif

Wow! 50! Lucky you! My guy would have a coniption if I had that many running around! I traded some chickens for some ducks last year and he complained to no end but that was more because the ducks would hang out on our deck instead of the pond and they left some BIG piles of poo. Every time he stepped in it I had to hear the "you have too many birds" lecture.
rant.gif
Sigh. Anyway I don't have anymore ducks
sad.png
I had some neat looking ones too. I ended up trading them for more chickens.
tongue.png
I had six ducks and ended up with 10 new hens and all the banties (Pickles the roo and a mama hen with 12 baby chicks, unfortunately the cats got some of the chicks and Rinty even got one, then I lost some to a skunk, then a possum.
somad.gif
Ginger and Georgie are the 2 who survived,) Anyway that's chicken math in action I guess! He hasn't complained too much since then except after I got this last batch of chicks he said I had maxed out my chicken limit. I've learned to just smile and nod my head and then find another way to do what I want! LOL.

Most of the chickens are my grandmas and she never bothered socialiazing them, i tried my best to socialize them and they eat out of my hand but they dont jump up on me, only the six chicks do, because their mama left them and they think that i am their mama (
tongue.png
), when the other mamas leave their chicks i will socialize them to.
How old is your daughter, when i was younger i loved bugs and lizards but we didnt have chickens i could feed them to...
I have a little girl (one of my neighbours) that comes over about twice a week and she just loves the chickens, she is quiet helpfull...
I got a laundry hamper from the grocery store that has holes in it (small ones) and i am going to set that up for them because the hamster cage is pretty small.
I love my chickens, two of them got sick and they were just lying there when i went in the coop so i picked them both up and made a private little coop for them and hope for the best.
hmm.png
fl.gif

It rained today and yesterday a lot which is really weird because no one was expecting it, it is summer time, it never rains here in the summer.
tongue.png

I would love to get a couple of ducks, we have a pond by the airport and there are lots of ducks there so i might just take one.
tongue.png

Ginger and Georgie are sisters?
I cant believe only two out of the twelve chicks survived.
sad.png

I really need to get a camera, i didnt know what i had till i lost it, i want to send pictures sooooooooo bad.

I've gotten chickens before that weren't socialized and it took A LOT of time and patience(and treats) to get them to even come and eat out of my hand. I've learned the only way to get them to be really friendly is to start when they're chicks. It's totally worth the effort tho when they're all sitting on my lap and shoulders and being so sweet. I probably look like the pigeon lady from mary poppins when I'm out there sitting with them!
tongue.png
LOL. My guy just asked me yesterday why don't I just set up a cot in the coop since I'm out there so much. Jeez.
roll.png

My youngest daughter is 4 and the oldest is 6. The little one(Emma May) will spend HOURS looking under bricks and digging in the dirt trying to find bugs and such, it's cute. The older one (Evie)gets just as dirty but she's more of a girly girl, thinks she's a rock star. They're both so funny, it's never boring around here! And they're helpful too...when they want to be.
tongue.png
That's sweet the little girl comes over and helps! She'll probably remember it all her life.
I wonder what happened to the sick ones??? Could it be the heat? Or maybe they ate something and it made them sick? I hope they get better!
Something got one of my kittens in the eye and I think she might lose it. I don't know what to do except give her some antibiotics to keep away an infection and I've been keeping it cleaned. It made me think of your one eyed chick. It doesn't seem to be bothering her any but I wonder if maybe she got in the coop and one of the chickens pecked her eye.
hmm.png

LOL, now your reduced to filching ducks from the airport! I can just imagine it, all in black in the dark of night with a pillowcase and some bread for bait then running away with a bag of ducks!
lau.gif
I think you should! Sounds like an adventure!
I would've thought you'd get rain all the time being on the water!
Yep, Ginger and Georgie are sisters, you wouldn't know it looking at them since they're colored so different. It's very possible Pickles is their dad which kind of made me wonder about the chicks hatching out with something wrong with them, but I guess it doesn't matter too much with chickens if they're inbreeding.
idunno.gif
I'll be so happy when that little hamburg crows so I know for sure if he's a he tho so there'll be some new blood in the flock. If he ends up being a she tho I don't know what I'll do. It seems like when I don't need a roo I'll have a half dozen but when I DO need one there aren't any to be found!
he.gif

I know, 2 out of 12 sounds awful and I felt awful about it! That's why I figure I can't be too careful now when it comes to keeping everyone contained. And I went around the fence in the chicken yard with some chicken wire so even the littlest chicks can't just walk thru the chainlink which is what happened when I got the banties. That and they're just so tiny, even the adults, like pigeon size and the cats think they're easy pickings. The cats have learned now that they AREN'T for eating! They've gotten pecked so much they quit trying. And I've smacked them everytime I've caught them so much asd looking at them.
I know what you mean about the camera! I went so long without one that I use mine ALL the time now! It's just an old cell phone camera that's why the pics aren't always so good but I'm grateful for it!

I found that pic I took after it flooded while I was looking for the duck pics! That's Rooster Cogburn on the boards above all the mess the water left behind. He flew down out of one of the trees and started crowing.

To socialize them i just sit down with bread in my lap and lure them towards me and eventually they get used to me and think of my as the lady with the goodies.
tongue.png

4 and 6 wow they are really young i thought they were like 8 and 10.
I really like their names!!
big_smile.png

I dont know what happened to them, they are still hanging in there but one of them is not doing well at all, she cant even walk, the other one is just old i think, she is one of the first ones i got, she was always such a tough girl and now that i look at her i just get so sad because she looks like she wants to die.
sad.png

I think what happened to the sick one is that maybe she stayed out in the rain because she was hot and got a cold or something...
I am sure that the kitten is going to be fine, i have had plenty of cats with one eye and they are just like the other ones.
Your chickens peck at your cats?!
lol.png

Oh that would be soooo funny if i had a pillowcase of ducks, i could never get away with it, everybody would see me because the tourist are up all night at the beach and stuff and are driving by all the time.
No, we dont get rain here at all in the summer, only in the winter but the summer heat here is like from April to October and then from October to April we have rain all the time, we dont really have Spring of Fall.
I am really lucky with my roosters, when i dont want them i dont have them but when i do want them i have them, it is funny, now i only have four roosters though, one got out and got hit by a car, the one that i sent you a picture of that you said looked like a sunset.
hit.gif

I found names for the two little chicks, Moonlight and Sunshine because that is what they look like.
Moonlight is the black one with the white under his chin so the black is like the night and the white looks like a moon and Sunshine is the yellow one that is quite colourfull and looks like the sun.
I know what you mean about keeping everyone contained, after i found my dead rooster on the road i went and collected all my chickens and put them in their coop, i probably wont let them free range this summer because it seems like every summer the tourist become even worse at driving so i say it is better safe then sorry.
I would use my cell phone to take pictures but i have no idea how to send them after, i am not very good with electronics.
tongue.png

Holy cow that flood must have been terrible!!!!!
We dont have hummingbirds here, bummer..
Your ducks are adorable, i love their names.

I lost one of the little chicks!
hit.gif
I don't know what happened! I found it out in the chicken yard just peeping and all by itself so I went out and got it and brought it in but it died the next morning. Argh, I just hate it. But, on a happier note, one of my cats had new babies that same nite the chick died. I guess it was meant to be that way. It's still sad tho. Poor baby.
That's how I do it too! I sit out there with something tasty and just do it everyday til they realize I don't want to hurt them, I want to feed them!
Lord, I can't imagine how I won't have a full head of grey hair by the time they get to 8 and 10. My mom says just wait til they hit 15 and act like I did at that age. That's what I get she says.
tongue.png

Well, if the sick ones are just at that age I guess all you can do is make them comfy while they're still here. I wouldn't know what to do for a chicken with a cold. Keep her warm and dry and plenty of fluids. Is she eating and drinking? You could give her some pedialyte or gatorade if she's drinking.
The little one eye kitten seems to be doing just fine. I'm still giving her the antibiotics and cleaning it. It looks terrible but I think it's causing me more misery than it is her.
I'm glad to hear you've had one eyed xcats and they did fine like that, it gives me hope that this one will too.
Yeah, the chickens peck the cats, sometimes they'll even get a hank of fur when they do it! One of them(Duckie cat) even sleeps in the coop during the day despite the pecks. Weirdo. He curls up in one of the nest boxes.
idunno.gif

HAHA, that would be hilarious about the ducks! Duck napper at large! You could tell any curious tourists that it's a Greek custom to carry ducks around in a pillowcase, it's good luck! LOL!
lau.gif

Wow, no rain them all rain! I bet that gets old quick!
I'm sorry your rooster got hit by a car! Stupid people not watching what they're doing! And he was sooo handsome! Mine used to go out in the road all the time trying to get to the field across the street. Yet another reason I keep them fenced in. I bet they didn't even stop when they did it. Jerks.
somad.gif
I hit a bird when I was driving yesterday and cried all the way home. It just makes me feel bad.
I LOVE your chick names!!! They sound perfect!
yippiechickie.gif
I'm still debating on names for my new ones. Except the faverolles, I'm naming them Lucy and Ethel(from I Love Lucy, I love that show and that's who they remind me of). And that one brahma I named chouette. But everyone one else is still waiting!
My cell phone has a memory card in it that saves my pics and when I want to put them on here I just put the memory card in a little card reader thing and plug the reader into my computer and then I can pull them up. My phone is like years and years old tho so I don't know how any of the others work. I'm assuming that they all probably work somewhat similar to that but don't quote me, it took me half a year to figure out how to do that much! I'll post a pic or two of the new baby cats later so you can see em. They are adorable. I won't take too many, I know I tend to overdo it on the pics sometimes!
