Is incubation time for eggs the same when they're under a broody hen as when they're in an incubator

Oh no, how sad...
hit.gif
What do you think happened to it, were was the mama??
How many kittens did she have?
One of the chickens that was sick died today, the other one that is just old is fine now and i put her in with the rest of the chickens so she isnt lonely.
They died on the same day, that is sort of cool and sad, at least my chicken can watch over your chick in chicken heaven.
tongue.png

I am sure you were like every other teenager at 15.
tongue.png

Do you homeschool your girls or do they go to a public school, sorry for being so nosy.
Before the chicken died, she wasnt eating or drinking anything, i felt so bad for her because before every time that i went in the coop she was one of the first ones to greet me and now when i go in i am like, where is she, that is how i found out that she was sick, i went looking for her when she didnt greet me and when i found her she was sitting in a corner with her head on a rock just looking up at me, it was soooo sad.
hit.gif

Is the eye gone or is it just swollen??
My chickens dont dare to peck the cats, if they do the cats will scratch them, they are mostly stray cats that i feed so i cant exactly train them to not peck them.
Haha it would be so hilarious if i told the tourist that, i would see a bunch of themcarrying ducks around in a pillowcase.
lau.gif

You hit a bird, how??
tongue.png

The only thing that i know how to do on my cell phone is call people and send messages.
tongue.png

Ooooh i love pics of baby animals, any kind except rats.
sickbyc.gif

Are you kidding me, i love that you send lots of pictures, it is so much fun looking at them, i am not kidding!
Ok so you know how i said that i bought a laundry hamper, i set it up two days ago.
So i cut up four cereal boxes and put them in each other so i had two little boxes and filled one with wood chips and the other with sand (i will tell you how i got the sandin a minute) and the one with wood chips i put a rock in so that they can climb on it and stuff and in the box with sand i put their food and water, they love it.
Ok now for the sand, it is actually dirt that i got from outside, but i dont like a bunch of rocks in it so i sifted it with mosquito netting for two hours so now i have a big box full of sifted dirt so that i can keep filling the box up.
Your two ducks are named after "I Love Lucy" to arent they, Fred and Ethel?

I have no idea what happened. Maybe it ate something to big?? Ginger and Georgie were ignoring it completely. Maybe they knew something was wrong? I'm sorry you lost yours too! Maybe they are together! It's nice to think they are!
smile.png

Dottie had 5 little kittens! They are so cute! I took some pics I'll get them on here tomorrow!
No, I don't homeschool, the bus actually comes out here and picks her up. The bus driver is our 2nd neighbor down the street! That worked out great! Evie will be in 1st grade in the fall and Emma won't start school til next fall. I don't mind you being nosy! I'm just as nosy! LOL!
tongue.png

The kittens eye isn't gone, and it actually looks better! Maybe she won't lose it after all! It still looks icky in the center but not as much as it did yesterday. That's funny your cats fight back but mine run away, mine will chase down and eat a snake but when it comes to a chicken they're a bunch af fraidy cats!
I can see the headlines now! New craze! Bags of ducks for good luck! LOL. I'm still laughing about that!
I hit it driving on the highway, it flew right into my car. It happened before I could even think about swerving. poor thing.
sad.png

Hey great job with your hamper-coop!
thumbsup.gif
I bet they just love it! I sifted dirt last year for my garden! I wanted to have some good loose dirt for some carrots and I spent all day sifting dirt thru a screen! Not a fun job! I hope your chicks appreciate your effort!
Yeah, fred and ethel were named from I Love Lucy too! I named boris and natasha from that old cartoon, rocky and bullwinkle. Mine all end up with french names or names from old tv shows with a few exceptions that get named because of their color or how they act.LOL I did have two EE's named Misty Moon and Misty Dawn(one was like a lavender and gold and the other was lavender and silver)Real pretty. I've still got Misty Dawn. She lays the blue eggs.
I thought something had happened to the other littlest chick last nite when I went out to close em up for the nite! I couldn't find it anywhere and both Ginger and Georgie were up out of the nest roosting on a board on one of the walls! I spent 2 hours out in the dark and bugs looking then decided to look in the coop one more time in case I'd missed it or something and I found it! It was up under Ginger on that board! I can't figure out how it got up there! Surely it can't fly yet? It was up there again tonite. I'm going to watch tomorrow nite and see how it's getting up there! It's like 4 foot or more off the floor. And, some of the older chicks have been roosting right next to the big girls! I'm so glad everyone is getting along so good! Finally!
yesss.gif

Ugh, and I just found out today that my mother in law and sister in law are coming to live in our old trailer down the street. If you knew them you'd understand what a horrid statement that is. They are...I don't even have words for what they are. Conniving and two faced to start, but they do it all while pretending to be your best friend. I won't bother you with that tho! My list of grievances with them is a mile long! I'm glad I'll have a nice person like you to talk to to erase the constant complaining they dish out! Sorry to whine but I had to get it out somehow! My mom told me to just tell them off once and for all but they're his mother and sister and I'm not trying to start any fights! otherwise I'd definitely give em a piece of my mind! Ok, now I'm done!
tongue.png

Anyway, I'll post some pics tomorrow! I'm glad you don't mind them! I've got a bunch I'd love to show you!
big_smile.png

And some pics of the vultures at work! LOL. I made some bread and had extra dough so I went ahead and baked it up for them. They saw me coming with it and rushed me! I had to spread it all out so they wouldn't fight over it. I think they smelled it baking, the coops right outside my kitchen window.

They can die from eating something to big, oh no i didnt know that, mine gobble things down that are as big as their head.
ep.gif

You got lucky with the bus driver!
Ok so now for the little kitten with the strange eye, lots of the stray cats that come around here have infected eyes and i feel bad for them so i clean them with a warm washcloth soaked in chamomile tea and it works pretty well, you can try it with the little kitten, i dont know if it will work but it is worth a try.
Hahahaha can you imagine stores selling bags of ducks, poor ducks!
lau.gif

Ohhh poor bird, actually dumb bird, what is it doing flying into cars? did it break your window?
Oh yeah, i used screen to, we just call it mosquito netting in greek.
Dont call me crazy but i built them a new little coop!
tongue.png

It is wire so that nothing can get through, i couldnt stand the smell of them in the house so i decided it was time for them to go outside...
I went to the hardwear store and got some wire mesh and went to work, so after lots of effort and cuts i made the cage, it sort of looks like a dog cage just a bit smaller, i cut out a little square for the door and then tied it back on with some wire but i made a little lock at the bottom so that nothing can get it. So the cage part was ready and i decided to put the chicks in but i didnt want them to be stepping on wire so i had to make something to put on the bottom of the cage, i found some cardboard and started cutting it up but i had made quite a small door so i couldnt put the whole big piece in so i had to cut it up into smaller pieces which i did, but then they wouldnt stay down so i decide to tie them, i went inside and got my hole puncher and started punching holes in it and after about three hours (not exaggerating) i had tied all the pieces of cardboard to the cage but then i thought they will slip on the cardboard so i put wood chips down and a cereal box with sand in it (for dust baths) food and water oh and a branch going across and a rock, for perches.
Now they have a nice little cage till they are a bit older and have to move again.
I am thinking of building a new coop for all the new chicks because the other one is getting pretty crowded and i dont want to have to introduce 19 new chicks in with the other flock just to have to move them again when they start getting big because there isnt enough room for them all, i will start when i get my camera so that i can take pictures and post them on here.
We didnt have Rocky and Bullwinkle here when i was growing up...
What happened to Misty Moon?
Funny little chick, did you figure out how he is doing it, how old is he now?
Ugh in-laws
smack.gif
(i just saw this emoticon and it seemed appropriate!!
lau.gif
).
In the trailer, wanst that in the middle of a floodplain, isnt that why you had to move??????
Poor you, they sound like all greeks, are you sure they arent?!
tongue.png

Eh thats not whining you should hear me when i am around people i dont like, that is whining!
They are moving to that trailer, what is wrong with their house?
When they are annoying you come on here and complain to me or one of you animals (animals are very good listeners) dont say anything to them just smile and nod along, you dont want to make the situation worse if they are going to be your new neighbours.
Have you told you DH that you dont like them, if you do he might see that you are putting up with them even though you dont want to and he might bump up your chicken limit!
highfive.gif

Ohhhhhhhhhh the kittens are sooooooooooooooo cute, your chickens look like mine when i give them some table scraps!!
lau.gif

Do you let Felix free outside?

I wouldn't worry about the bigger chicks or chickens eating big stuff( I've seen mine eat frogs and mice before! yuck
sickbyc.gif
) But that little banty chick was just SO tiny, maybe he got a hold of something he couldn't get down all the way. Or something sharp? Our house is like a hundred years old and theres all kinds of wierd stuff buried all over. I think there used to be some kind of outbuilding or a drive or something where the coop is now, maybe they scratched something up or even a sharp piece of gravel. There's like over a foot of gravel about a foot under the dirt that's there now. Plus I've been out there planting stuff, maybe it got something I turned over in the dirt. I'd really feel bad if it's my fault! That's all I can figure since he was fine one minute then gone the next, and the other one is doing great so I don't think it could be disease or anything or someone else would have it.
hu.gif

That's a good idea with the chamomile! I've got oodles of it! (I use it to put highlights in my hair!)I'll try some. I've been rinsing her eye with salt water. I thought it would sting but my mom said that's good for killing germs. The chamomile would probably help soothe it tho! I know it wouldn't hurt!
No, it didn't break my window thank goodness! I just had to replace my rear window when the mower kicked up a bolt (that fell off the mower) and broke it out! Almost %00 dollars to fix it! My insurance wouldn't cover it, the jerks. The bird flew right into the bumper.
roll.png

I know what you mean about the smell! I had those 23 chicks in our house for almost a month and a half and even tho I changed the litter everyday and had hebs mixed in, it got to where the house smelled like a barn. They were just too big to keep inside any longer. It sounds like you did a great job on the new coop tho! # hours tying cardboard huh? LOL, that's funny. It takes an awesome mama to spend hours st a time sifting dirt and tying cardboard, not to mention the cuts that come with working with wire! I look like I've waltzed thru a cactus patch every time I mess with it! I'm excited for you to make a new coop! That's what I've been wanting to do ever since the roof on mine started leaking! I want to reroof it, I've got some nice green shingles from a job the dh did and had extras, then I've got some nice big windows he brought home from another job that would look real nice in it. I thought about painting some up like stained glass even, just for some fanciness.
tongue.png
I'd like to fix the concrete floor in there too where some chunks have cracked. OH! (I'm so excited can you tell?) And I want to make some of those nest boxes that are attatched to the wall and have like holes cut out, they almost look like square bird houses stacked together with perches in front of each row of holes. And put up one of those dutch doors instead of the gate I've got on it. And finally, some paint! Lots and Lots of paint! Maybe paint some chicken theme signs for the outside , like an old general store. You can see why I haven't got it done yet, my to do list is forever long and I'm the one that has to do it all. Have you thought about how you'd like to do your new one?
I lost Misty Moon last year when we had that bad drought, I lost 2 roosters and 3 other hens then too.
hit.gif
I think it was the heat. Our well ran dry and I wasn't able to make any ice or fill the pools for them like I usually do for over a month and a half. We were down to whatever water we could haul in and it wasn't much. I drive a little granny car buick (our truck was broke down)and had to haul water in gallon jugs (at a dollar a piece) It got to where I was driving our mower with a little wagon hitched on across the road to one of the ponds that hadn't dried all the way up and filling buckets. I douldn't spare any for my gardens and they pretty much dried up to nothing, that's why I'm short on herbs and such now. Anyway, that was a bad summer all around! I hope mother nature gives us a bit of a break this year!
I didn't catch him doing it last nite either! Sneaky thing. Could it be holding onto Ginger with his little feet when she jumps up there? I think it's close to a month since they hatched(it doesn't seem like it!)so surely he's not flying up there. I'm going to try again tonite! It's got me totally curious!
HAHAHA, that was the perfect emoticon! They have to move because they got in a fight with the lady that was "supporting" them and they can't afford to stay without her help. They've been in wisconsin. And yes, the trailer that's in the middle of the floodplain. Plus it's haunted(seriously, I'll have to tell you about that sometime!) His sister lived there last summer and ran him ragged. Fix this, fix that, cut the grass, I need firewood, the ghosts are bothering me, I'm cold, I'm hot, blah, blah, blah. OMG. She's the one that wanted to live like a "pioneer" and invited herself in the first place, she had a free place to live when she didn't have any where else to go plus ended up hanging out here most of the time, plopped on my couch with her dog that was infested with fleas(she said he wasn't, it was a skin allergy, whatever) and he peed on everything(she denied it of course, even tho we caught him doing it over and over!) And she never had money because she spent everything she got on lottery tickets and cigarettes and the casino. She ended up leaving without saying bye or thanks or anything, just left in the night and left trash and junk AND (and this is what made me mad more than anything before and after) she left her cats down there! Left them! One didn't make it! Plus after that she said that all she did down here was help US out and that we just asked and asked of her and she just couldn't do enuogh for us and we treated her like crap the whole time.
barnie.gif
The nerve of some people! The mother is the same and I have to deal with both of them til they get sick of it and leave again! My only hope is that they won't hang out here so much because I imposed the no smoking in the house rule and they smoke like chimneys.(I'm not trying to be a hypocrite, I smoke too but I only 1 pack over 2 days and never in my house, I hate the smell)You're so awesome for listening to me vent! That's a GREAT idea about upping my chicken limit! I hadn't hought of that! See? You're helping already!
thumbsup.gif

I don't really let him run loose outside, I take a section of his cage out on the deck. Sometimes I take him around the yard on his little leash or let him play in the kiddie pool on his leash,or if there's snow out in winter I let him loose for a bit just cause he can't get far!
I almost forgot! I think Georgie might be feeling broody again! She was sitting in the nest yesterday and today after completely avoiding it for awhile now! Have you had chickens sit on eggs again that soon, or do you know how often they get that way? Fingers crossed! I want the blue eggs to get hatched!
fl.gif

The bird flew into your bomper, oh no, that must of hurt, my mom was driving on the high way once and a bird flew right into her window and broke it!
Well i have two chicks so i dont know what it would be like to have 23 that is A LOT of cleaning, they poop like 20 times a day, EACH.
rant.gif

Wow that coop sounds fantastic, i dont have any ideas for my coop but i want it to be easy to get the eggs and to clean, because the coop that i have my older ones in is a nuisance, to collect the eggs i have to climb under to the nests because they pick were they want their nests even though i made some "easy to get to " nest boxes and they poop EVERYWERE so i am crawiling in poop trying to get to the eggs, at least i clean it when it gets really dirty!
I am thinking of fixing the old coop to because like i said it is a nuisance and i always worry about them in the winter because of all the rain and some of them stay out in it!
We have never had a drought here thank god, even though it doesnt rain for like six months and everybody wastes water...
That sneaky little chick, is there any way he can jump up on something and then get up on the board?
Ok now i agree with your mom, you HAVE to tell them off once, or just make them do things like feed the chickens (
lau.gif
) you should teach the chickens to peck her when she goes outside.
So when are they moving in?
When ever i dont want anyone to come in my house i just lock the door and say i am sleeping.
lol.png

She left her cats?
somad.gif

Are your dogs allowed in the house, if not than have a "no dogs in the house" rule, actually dont tell her off just be really strict, like if she brings the dog in the house say: <<This is my house and i said no dogs, if you want to bring the dog inside than go do it in the trailer.>> And just keep at it but in a strict voice and eventually she will get that she can not do whatever she wants in YOUR house, you are already doing enough for her by letting her live in the trailer.
I feel so bad for you, i hate people like that!
hugs.gif

"The ghosts are bothering me!"?????
lau.gif
lau.gif

That is even funnier than ducks in a bag!!!!!
How is that house haunted?
No i never had a chicken start laying that fast but maybe the chick that died was "hers" and the other one is Gingers and she is feeling like more chicks, who knows...
I did have a really broody hen once, she would lay like ten eggs or so and then go broody, raise the chicks, wait till they where old enough, leave them and then start all over again, she was so great until one day she disappeared and i went looking for her and i found her dead, she was pretty old but it was sooooooooooo sad...
That would be awesome if Georgie was broody though!

That's scary that it broke her window! That could have made her wreck! I'm glad she didn't! That would have scared me to death!
LOL! Yeah the chicken poop definitely adds up doesn't it! Poor you crawling thru all that! I'm laughing too tho, sorry, I can't help it!
lau.gif
I've done that so much I know EXACTLY what you mean! I'm so glad mine lay all their eggs in the nest I put in there for them now. I think they like it since it's still on the floor(from where I lowered it for Ginger and Georgie). And since the floor is concrete it's easy to just scrape it off with this little kid size snow shovel and then I hose it off. I have to sweep the water out afterwards tho since whatever idiot poured the concrete in there(before we moved here) poured it nice and level so the water doesn't run off to one side it just sits there. especially where all the cracked parts are.
roll.png
I use big branches for roosts so when they get nasty I just throw them on the burn pile and go find fresh ones.
You remind me of alice in wonderland crawling thru the rabbit hole, except your crawling thru the chickenhole trying to find eggs instead of the rabbit!
lau.gif

Stupid chickens, you'd think they would have sense enough to get out of the rain, not stand in it! Mine do it too tho, so go figure. I used to have turkeys and they did that too. They would stand right out in a downpour and practically drown themselves. Turkeys are definitely stupid!
I'm looking forward to hearing how you decide to fix you coop up! Maybe you could plan an area in the big coop like you did with the little chick coop you just made. Put them some sand and stuff in there to scratch in so maybe when it rains, they'll figure out it's much nicer to scratch around in the dry sand instead of out in the rain and mud. Although that would be a heck of a sifting job to get enough for all the big ones! Oh and I thought of something else that would be neat by a coop! A little pond with a fountain in it! Maybe a couple goldfish too(if the chickens didn't eat them!) Like a little chicken habitat, you know? Like they do at zoos, make their cages look like a piece of the wild.
big_smile.png

That's so ironic to live on an island and yet not have water for 6 months out of the year! And to waste it on top of it all!
I still managed to miss seeing that little chick get up there! Little sneak. Maybe he's just jumping like you said.. There's some logs on the floor next to the nest box that the "teenager" chicks roost on, maybe he's jumping on them, then to the nest box, then onto the corn crates that are on that, then to a branch that's next to that, then up on the ledge.
yippiechickie.gif
That's possible I guess. LOL, like a little monkey chicken.
gig.gif

It's so funny that you said that about teaching the to peck her! I had gotten 6 roos from an old farmer down the road two summers back and I just let them run loose and she was down here(she ends up here everytime she's between people to mooch off of)and they chased and pecked at her everytime she got out of her car!
celebrate.gif
It was great til they started doing it to everyone. Then they had to go unfortunately.
I don't know when they'll be here exactly, he just said the end of the month. I wish I could lock the door and pretend I'm sleeping! But the girls would give me away! Yeah, I let our dogs in the house. But, I'm thinking that might actually work in my favor this time. Rinty is big, but Buddy is huge, and her dog is a little dog like your Roxie. So I'm going to tell her that Buddy isn't friendly around other dogs except Rinty and this is their house first so...She treats that dog better than she treats her kids (who are all really messed up because of her. She used to leave them with her mom or their dads while she ran off for months to years at a time with strange guys and wouldn't call or anything and I think it gave them all mental problems)so I don't think she'll want to leave him outside. I think between that and the no smoking, and no one wanting to listen to their constant poor me crap(he won't even put up with that) and I plan on being VERY busy
wink.png
and making sure they're in my way no matter what I'm doing, hopefully they won't hang out much. I know it sounds excessive but...a person's got to do what a person's got to do you know? If they're going to make all of us miserable, I'm going to do my best to return the favor. I'm not usually such a mean person, but they both have crossed the line over and over. And her leaving those poor cats down there-in august in the middle of a drought-that was the straw that broke the camels back. She could have at least dropped off a note on the door or sent a text message saying they were there. Instead they sat there for days with no water or food. I just can't stand people that treat animals like that. She took that dog of hers tho! But figured the cats would fend for themselves even tho they had been indoor cats all their lives and were so fat they couldn't have climbed a tree or anything to get away from something trying to get them. It just burns me up.
somad.gif

I think the ghosts bother her because they know how she is! She called us one night at 4 in the morning saying that she tried to take the dog out but they had her locked in and she couldn't get out. So he had to go down there and get her out. The door really was stuck but it sticks all the time anyway. Then she tried to say that one of them grabbed her foot and yanked her out of bed. That ghost must have been a lumberjack or something since it'd take a hefty person to pull her fat butt any distance.
tongue.png

I only had one incident that actually scared me enough that I thought about getting out of there,
hide.gif
everthing else that happened was more startling than scary. I've always had lots of cats tho and I think cats keep the bad spooks away. I'll tell you the some of the ghost stories in my next post! Otherwise this one will be a mile long!
I think I jumped the gun thinking she was broody again! She wasn't on it today. She hasn't laid any eggs in there either, at all. Neither one of them have actually. I'm going to leave a few eggs in there tho in case she changes her mind. I knew it was too good to be true! That's sad you found that hen like you did! She sounded like a great mama chicken to have!
