I would not be too concerned with the feather loss. Some chickens molt slowly over several months and others molt quickly in a matter of several weeks. Usually, the fast molters are the better layers. Anyway, decreasing her light could have triggered her molt.
Following your thread. So sorry that Deckie is struggling a bit. She is so lucky to have you. I have no doubt that she knows how much she is loved. Do what you feel is right for her, she is precious , I hope she gets stronger.
Hello hensintheHOUse. Thank you for posting all of the details of Deckies ordeal. I haven't read all of your thread but have looked at quite a few of your photos and now am certain that my Rosie has the same condition. We are doing a few meds for comfort reasons for her as she still seems to have some vigor and life to her, despite some of her symptoms and prognosis.
She's our favorite and this is quite a tough thing for us.
One can't help but feel your compassion and care for Deckie and get a sense of her character.
Just had to put one of my girls down this evening because of peritonitis. The vet drained 500ml of fluid from her. She lost an entire pound of weight from just that. She was eating and drinking but all the fluid build up was affecting her breathing. After they drained it they sent the analysis of the fluid to CSU and consulted with their bird doc. They said I could have had maybe three more days with her on antibiotics but I could stand to see her suffering again when the fluid came back. She would have been 3 in March.
I also have a Leghorn called Lilly who is starting to suffer with this. She has been a poorly bird since I rescued her and came to me with many problems. This one though I can't cure. She has always laid soft shelled eggs, many of them, 3-4 a week and we have tried everything available to help her take up calcium.
When she started to moult last week which is a bit late I worried because it seemed to take more out of her.
I,'ve provided extra protein and everything she could possibly need but this morning her poop was like deckies with the white in it and she wanted to stay in her coop. She's just finished her antibiotic and I'm at a loss. My heart goes out to you, it's so hard to watch them decline

1/14/2014 Update: Her weight 2034g ( -2g compare to yesterday.) 12days past since I stopped giving her Baytril.
Deckie started eat a lot from yesterday for some reason. I wonder why.. but she keeps eating a lot.
She eats about 10 -20 crickets, 5 super worms, oats, a couple of her regular food, seeds ( MannaPro Gartden Deright) that she doesn't care for sun flower seeds and broccoli)
Greek plain yogurt.
I feed her fermented raisins, Natto ( fermented soybeans ) and dried garlic and egg yolk orally,
and this one, I had fed to her for 2 weeks? may be..
The Natural Made calcium pill is too big for her to feed orally, then I cut in a half, but that was little trouble for me.
so, I bought this at Walmart.
( that with magnesium make hens lay more eggs than the lower magnesium with the same level of calcium... that is I read on the link. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9154623
That is why she is pooping the rotten eggs? or good things that she can poop them out... I don't know.. but she seems more active today.)
I had fed her about 24ml for 2 weeks? I guess.
Now, I will feed her this every day for 3-6ml orally, or depends on how I feel when I see her.
It is easy for me to use a syringe to feed her, which I learned from Kathy when I give Baytril to her.
After I use the syringe, I sterilize it by putting in the boiling water for a few minutes.
