Is it acceptable to leave light on for the birds 24 hours a day?

When I maintained 14 hours of light, I did it with a timer that turned on during the night, so they could still have the natural falling of the light at dusk. I bought an indoor timer for about $10. I believed they should rest better with a period of dark -- but that was just an opinion. I was interested that Ridgerunner pointed out above that there are egg defects associated with continuous light.

This is my normal porch light, so I'm not sure how I could put a timer on it.... which is the only reason I ask. Usually I keep my birds natural, but would like the predator protection light would provide, and getting more eggs would be a bonus I guess...
