is it honestly worth it ? corgi help

about the corgis getting along...weve had both male and female corgis, and the females are definitely the more aggressive. They tend to be that way anyway, but I would rather have 2 males than 2 females together any day! Good luck, they are great dogs, but I think a lot end up in rescues because of behavior problems or old age. Ive tried rescues too with vet references, good fencing, room to run, home all day, etc and its never good enough. This has been for corgis and shepherds, finally went to breeders, and got lucky with a CL shepherd, but I wouldnt recommend it.

Funny after I was told I didn't have a high enough fence for a basset mix, too many animals for the collie rescue (and a small child), a small child for the lab rescue... I was able to adopt a greyhound- she will be coming to her forever home soon.

The rest of the places are idiots.

I do have a physical fence- theer is a pitbull who is really sweet to humans unless she's bred (again) and always animal aggressive except to her 'mate' who runs with her.

I would not trust her to not attack my animals if my animals are not included in a fence.

I refuse to support these so called rescue groups lol. While I'm sure there are many well intentioned people involved with them, all I have encountered are pompous know it alls. The shelters are just as bad. Our local shelter kills thousands of animals, yet still wants a high price to "adopt" one. They will really put you through the paces too. Frankly, I'm not too high on professional breeders either. The term reputible breeder gets thrown around way too much.

Check your area for a Corgi Club. The club I belong to here will send out e-mails about Corgis needing a new home.
From what I remember they like to meet you and any dog or Corgi you presently own and see if the dogs will get along.
The adoption fee is for the care they have done for the dog while they had them. They like fenced yards in town and urban areas, but do understand about the country life.

Had a sour adoption with a shelter. DS's cat had dies suddenly. She had eaten a foxtail weed. Our vet found out what happened. DS was heart broke so we went to a shelter to see if he could adopt a cat. They refused. Said their vet said the new cat could get ill in our house because we already had 3 other cats.
We left disgusted and went a different private shelter.
DS found his new cat there. Heard another person there say they couldn't adopt a cat at the other shelter either.

Please don't give up on shelters.

We have a mountain of them in this area. I agree with all the negative things people have said about shelters - I've seen it all at one shelter or another. But all shelters are not like this and all rescue groups are not full of "pompous know it all's" (which is the exact phrase I've used for several rescues in the area

Please keep looking. The dogs can't help it if the shelters they end up in have silly rules and are staffed by people we do not agree with.

I always adopt from a shelter. But there are several in the area that I know are in it for the benefit of the human director - not the animals. I won't adopt from them. There are groups that ask you to foster dogs for them, incur all expenses, then they charge hundreds of dollars to potential adopters - again not in it for the dogs.

But many many shelters are in it for the dogs. Please don't give up, keep looking, I'm sure you will find a Corgi in a shelter with people who use common sense and are in the field to help the dogs.

Well what's been done to these dogs?

If they are fixed, had dental work, training or testing for best home 'fit', microchiped, wormed, on hartworm meds, on flea meds... that's really not unreasonable (here we pay that much for just a spay!).

They're transported in from wherever they've been, are fixed, evaluated, gotten back to health, and (looks like) individually fostered. I'd challenge anyone to do that for a single dog in Maryland for under $400. I ship dogs relatively frequently and it's up around $250 now just to ship.

Rescues, especially breed specialist rescues, have the right to be extremely choosy about where they put their dogs. Their responsibility is to the dogs, not to applicants; most of their dogs have been brought in from great distances and have more specific needs or special circumstances than the stray or owner surrenders at pounds or shelters.

As a breeder with a very extensive screening process, in a community of breeders who do the same, I can tell you that we're not looking for the rich folk or the ones who impress us with a home or car. We're looking for a commitment to the dog's welfare that is equal to our own. If that seems overly picky that's fine. I've given away puppies and I've taken payment plans on puppies and I've gotten checks from people who drive brand-new Porsches. The Porsche-drivers don't "win." They happen to be good applicants, so they get a puppy. The person who says they can only give me a few hundred a month who happens to be a good applicant gets a puppy. Sometimes the reason they can only give me a few hundred a month is because they spent money to put up a safe fence - it's happened, and I'm thrilled with a committed owner like that.

I've had dogs and/or cats for over 40 years. I've never bought one, never paid a shelter fee, never gotten one from a shelter. They are all rescues or strays with various stories behind them. It's easy enough to do if you aren't determined to have a particular breed. If you are, go to a good breeder and be prepared to pay.

An acquaintance recently paid to adopt two dogs from a shelter, lying to them about fence to get the dogs. Supposedly they were wormed, but they both had such an awful case of worms that they were literally digging their way out through the dogs' skin. Several vet bills later, they survived their infestations.

I assume there are good shelters out there, but this was a nationally recognized name, so I'd sure do a lot of research before I trusted one. Easier to answer an ad on the vet's bulletin board or in the local free paper.
