Is It Hot? Check on your chickens!!! We lost 2 young pullets today

sorry to hear about your birds.... and WOW that is hot! Thanks for the warning too!
it's been hot and humid here as well, and oddly I kept thinking about how we were going to keep the coop warm in the winter...now I need to think about how to keep it cool and the ladies cool! Can chickens have ice water? or is that too extreme?

Sorry that you have to deal with not only being hot yourselves, but the harshness of it on the girls....Sounds like your daughter is taking things very practically. Growing up on a farm, it tended to be that way. Living in the city up til now for several years, I have grown soft. I hope I get my endurance back and that my daughter will also have valuable lessons from the farm.

It was 103 where I live today and will probably be a bit hotter tonight... And I kid you not when I say I'm not leaving the house today or tomororw until night time. Literally. I've been staying inside, catching up on some reading and playing some video games. God bless my air conditioning, man.

And it sucks because I think we're going to have to push back egg collection for at least a week or until it cools down until at least the 90s, before they go into the breeding pens out in the sun...

Its so hard to lose them!!! I am very sorry.

We have had a very cool/mild summer here, but last summer we had some close calls. I am glad your daughter is taking it ok.

It was supposed to be 110 today and I'm extremely worried. I wasnt able to see my birds today, and Im scared of what I'll find tomorrow. Hopefully everyone is ok, I know they all had water. Sorry for your losses, Rob.

Nifty Chicken. I am so sorry about your chicks. Thanks for posting so that we can all be informed.


We had a really hot spell awhile ago and someone on here said to put an ice block in or near the coop and use fans. I wasn't able to freeze a block that day but threw a leftover bag of party ice down on the ground and my fours hens layed near it all day. I think it really made them more comfortable. Thanks to whoever made that suggestion.

I was mother hen today trying to keep everyone cool.

I dread going to work on Thursday and leaving them alone. Hopefully it won't be so HOT!
