I have 2 ducklings that came in a order of chicks, I ordered the surprise box from cackle hatchery. They will be 2 weeks old Monday. The ducklings have been in the brooder with the chicks this whole time. I removed them last night and had them in their own brooder but the duckling scream so loudly without the chicks. I placed the ducklings back with the chicks and they was OK, quite as a mouse. Any ideas on what I should do? How long is it OK to keep them together? I have never had this problem.

This is one of them on the day I got them. They both look the same.

As long as you are keeping the brooder box clean and somewhat dry you shouldn't have any problems. Chicks don't do well with lost of moisture. I always brood mine together and have never had any problems. I use small PVC pipe with chicken wire over it in the bottom of my brooder box. The PVC pipe creates about an inch gap at the bottom of the box. I then put hay over it so that way any water mess made by the ducks drains to the bottom of the box. Good luck with your babies! What kind did you get in the surprise box?

Thanks, I have to Clean the brooder out 3 to 4 times a day, and I have the waterer in a small cooking pan.

I would not personally just because I have read stories on these forums of ducklings trampling chicks in the brooder once they get a bit older and the size difference is larger.

Plus ducklings like a wet messy brooder and that condition causes stress and disease in small chicks.

Thanks everyone, I really want to take them out because they do make a mess, but boy they are so loud without the chicks. I removed them again earlier, all they would do was scream and run. I thought they would settle down but they didn't and then the chicks started peeping real loud for them. I put them all back together and everyone was fine. Maybe I will try this weekend when I move them out of the house.

Putting a stuffed animal I'm each brooder might help settle them all down.
