Is it ok to kill pest birds like finches and doves that eat your feed

Chicken feed is not expensive.

It's still another dern bill. And I don't think the OP is getting bird seed donation.

I wouldn't kill the Dove's but that is just me. I was worried about disease transmission during our unusual snow and record cold earlier this year. The tractor had them waiting for us to open the door and was full of them all day. I'm not leaving the chickens cooped up all day and not locking them out either to keep the random sparrows...etc....... out.

It's illegal to kill birds without a permit (except, you can kill European Starlings & House Sparrows without a permit) however, no dove in AZ is invasive from my research.

(OP) You are breaking the law, and if you really want to kill doves then contact your local government office that handles the environment (for where I am, the DEC - Department Of Enviromental Conservation)

What I personally do not understand is why you are killing them and not just putting up some netting or improving your set up.
I feel like sh!t right now☹️
If you feel like sh!t, then just think of other solutions. (I would recommend putting out some bird seed for them)

Edit: I think that it is morally ok to kill something (legally) that is attacking your birds, but eating feed isn't attacking

Today I killed 5 or 6 doves that were in my run eating all my feed. I killed them because I knew they would come back. I track them by pulling 3 of their tail feathers but I know which to pull so It wont hurt them when they fly around. The 6 doves had 3 tail feathers missing. They came back 5 times and ate all my feed. I feel really bad for killing them but do you guys think its morally OK to kill pest birds that enter your coop? I feel like sh!t right now☹️
Try feeding your chickens once a day.
Also what are you feeding your chickens? I haven't had any problems with birds eating my chickens' layer pellet feed.

This is all I found .Diffrent states have different laws .Most state fish and wildlife departments set wildlife regulations .Check with your local wild life management. I would not feel bad about killing nuisance animals .Neither does fish and wild life .I shoot rats and mice all the time .Backyard chickens are pets not at all profitable .Them eggs you love so much might as well be gold plated .When I was young no bird or animal was safe feeding off my chickens pigs cows whatever .Got softhearted in my old age .let go many that should be killed .Wild birds are easily frightened away with spinning sunflowers .Hanging aluminum pie pans .It is crazy how many things will not scare a chicken .The they go squawking at something really stupid .

I wouldn't have harmed the doves either, and not just because it is against the law.

No reason to, I trust in OP's ability to be creative to come up with a way to protect the feed since he was apparently able to remove three tail feathers from several wild doves without incident. If you're able to do that, you should be able to figure out a way to protect your feed from intruders. Good luck.

I feed them purina medicated adult chicken feed. I tried upgrading them to pellete rather than normal chicken feed, but the tiny sparrows ate the giant pellete feed for her chickens too, and they were SPARROWS. my neighbor also has those 6 doves come and eat up all her feed and she uses chicken wire and everything. I have also done everything I could too. She told me she spends 30 USD a week for giant bags of feed. Her chickens eat less than 5% of the feed, pest sparrows house finches and those 6 damn doves ate up the 95%. She has gotten so sick and tired of the sparrow and house finches she is going to give me all her chickens on april 2nd. She also has to buy different brands of food every week because of those god damn pest birds, it really stresses out her chickens. I also have a rooster and have tried to train him to attack backyard birds that come into the coop that try to eat feed but he doesn't see the pest birds as a threat... I also might delete this threat since it started a chat war

I think it is Okay to protect your food investment. I like the idea of feeding in am in coop. I have wild birds in yard that go into run even tho I feed them also. ! Bought chicken wire to keep out of chain link fence d area and they fly right through it! So that was money wasted.:bow I don't give as much scratch as I did in cold and that has helped some. It's okay to kill them as there is an abundance of doves here too. Otherwise there wouldn't be a hunting season for them.
