Is it possible for there to be a blood ring in an egg with a living embryo?

BUT... In candling, I found 9 moving little babies! Happy dance! So it can end on a good note and I now know what to look for. I just don't know what caused it...

Also that egg is going in the greenbin tomorrow morning, I've heard too many horrific old wives' tales of eggs with blood rings blowing up or killing embryos and fetuses around them!

they are not tales, it can happen, if a bad egg is left too long in the bator it builds up gasses in it with the potential to explode spreading bacteria to the good eggs and killing them too!

I have a 13 day egg in the incubator with a distinct blood ring. The wierd thing is that the embryo inside is clearly moving/active. Having a hard time throwing the egg out - but should I throw it out even though there is an active embryo? Thanks!

welcome to BYC sometimes blood rings look like the veins that should be there and sometimes the yolk moves almost looking like a live embryo. wait a few days and recandle

Well, I know I'm going to sound stuck up, but you are sure it's a blood ring? If you can see the baby moving, my guess would be it is just the embryonic membrane thingy expanding around the egg. There is a fantastic sticky about hatching eggs by Pete something... Can't exactly remember the username. But I was having a thick 'blood ring' developing around the egg between days 7 and 15, but it's just part of the chick growing. :) try and find that sticky, it's a fantastic read.

I would leave it in for another 2-3 days, candle again, and if there is still a defined blood ring, and no strong veins, or movement, then I think you can make the decision about taking it out or not.

Hi SixChickies, It was a blood ring and the embryo stopped moving after a few more days. I opened the egg yesterday and the embryo - while developed - had already started decomposing inside. I think this is a note to self to call it a dud once there's a distinct blood ring. Thank you!

Is this a blood ring or did I kill my chick?
Candled at day6 & noticed what looks like blood ring in 3 eggs. Today's day 10 & I didn't notice any changes in these eggs, so I cracked one open. No movement. No odor. Should I remove the other two or wait another couple days.

I never used to remove eggs, but last year I had an egg pop open on day 20 while all the chicks were pipping. I thought the bad egg was actually hatching due to all the rocking & rolling going on. (Other eggs were quite active causing the bad egg to move.) I never want to experience that smell again! Because I had to do an emergency incubator cleaning, only 6 out of 18 eggs hatched.

I guess no one knows. I posted a thread about the red rings this morning and more pictures of what they look like. If they look like yours I'll bet mine aren't any good either.
