You need some sort of actual food like flock raiser crumbles. I don't give layer feed until they are laying same with any oyster shells. If they are outside they can get their own grit.Your rooster just needs crumbles no layer feed he's got no eggs for you.

A 50lb bag of chicken feed only runs 13 dollars where I am.
You will have to check your local feed stores for pricing but I can assure you feed is not much more then scratch. A few dollars more.

I've used both i like the flock crumbles because they like them better .

Check the labels on the bags at your local feed store. The main differences are the calcium and protein levels.

We've had good luck with a 5 gallon bucket with PVC corners attached on the inside of the bucket. They stick their heads in through the corners to get to the food on the bottom. No waste.

They also seem to love the fermented in the morning.
