Most of my the "freshly laid eggs" that I get are laid in the nest box lined with a grassy hay so they are clean. Clean eggs are put in an egg carton on the counter and when the carton is fill DH will give it to friends. If a piece of the grass/hay sticks to the egg, it gets picked off and egg is put in carton on the counter. Occasionally, I will get a soft egg or cracked egg that will then get egg on all the eggs in the nestbox. When that happens all eggs get washed in hot soapy water and put in the fridge. If a chicken with poop on their feet gets into the nest box and gets the eggs dirty, those eggs get washed and put in the fridge. A little bit of mud is usually just wiped off real quick with a damp paper toweling and put in the egg carton on the counter. I usually date each egg.
