I have a 4 month old chicken that we think is a buff orpington. We are not sure if it a rooster or not and if it is we have to get rid of it due to city laws.
He/she has been crowing in the morning when it is in the outdoor pen but that is the only time. Please let me know ASAP
See how the tail feathers go up and then begin to bend downward? That is a great rooster indicator. CROWING is a sure indicator it is a rooster, though a few hens have been known to crow. Hens' tail feathers DO NOT curve over. I had a hen I was using for a breeder who had a comb and wattles this large. My son and husband ASSUMED she was a rooster because of those and killed her while we were killing roosters for the freezer.
