My chicken Leski recently hatched 3 chicks, the chicks are a little older now and when they were chicks leski was fiercely protective of them. the issue is now that one of the chickens is slightly darker than the others and Leski has started to segregate it from the others.... is Leski a hardcore racist?

i dont think chickens are capable of being racist. there is a possibility that since she is segregating the one darker chick that it might be a rooster. depending on how old the chick is now, you should be able to tell whether or not it is a rooster by its feathers and behavior.

good luck with your new chicks!

So is it impossible for chickens to be racist or have we not started to shun that behaviour as a society? Perhaps we need to create more awareness of chicken racism.
I walked past the coop today and Leski was marching around with the two white chicks following behind. They had the brown chicken behind a small pile of twigs. I was concerned so this afternoon I am getting a very dark chicken to add to the coop and see what happens. Hopefully I can create a balanced racial blend in my chickens.

Normally by week 6 the hen is finished with the chicks so how old are the chicks anyway
