Hi,
So I only have one egg in the incubator, and it was mishandled and has a tiny hairline crack that I covered up with wax. It looks fine, except now when I candle the egg I can see two little bubbles - presumably air - inside, is that ok? It is a new egg - when I candled it before you can just see the yolk and a tiny dark spot in the middle of it. It is on day two, so by day three or so I expect to see something happening, correct? I can post pictures of the candling if needed, I am not even sure it's fertile, I am very very very new to this!!
Thanks

Honestly, that doesn't sound good. Chicks should have a single, stable airspace on top, and in conjunction with the crack... If you could post pictures of the candling, that would be great.

Here are some pictures, as I said in my welcome post it's not a chicken - the egg was on the side of the road, and we all looked around to try and find it. The animal shelters etc. near us don't take eggs, so I put it in an incubator - it is probably a house sparrow if I am identifying it correctly.

I have no way to know if its fertile with my inexperience

What should it look like during day 1-2 w/candling?
I don't do sparrow eggs, but chicken chicks take twenty-one days, and sparrow chicks take fourteen, so I'm going to guesstimate what you should see.
Day one, you shouldn't see much, but the top of the yolk will begin to take on an orange tint. Day two, you should see a fine network of blood vessels, about a half to a quarter inch in diameter.

I use clear nail polish for cracked eggs. I tried wax once but it rubbed off. Then the egg totally disappeared with no trace so I never got to see if it worked. I have a teensy crack on one of my hatching eggs now and I put nail polish on it

Since it's still basically day one, isn't mine ok? Why do you say it's dead/infertile. I am curious

Couldn't that be toxic if it got inside the shell??

Someone on BYC did it and had a successful hatch. That’s where I heard about it
