I have read when a pullet is getting ready to start laying her comb and wattles will start to grow and turn red. I have not seen any pictures though as an example. In the first picture is Mrs. Garrett, a just-turned-5 month old golden comet/gold star (if there is a difference) and in the second picture is Goldie Hahn, a buff orp of the same age. There is a marked difference between the two as far as color and size of their combs and wattles... so I'm wondering is Mrs. Garrett is getting ready to lay or is this a difference in breeds?

A big difference. I have golden comets and here are my girls at eighteen weeks. Mine are two days shy of 20 weeks and all are laying. See the thread my first jumbo egg. GC
