I'm kind of confused with the whole Red thing. Are they simply referred to as a New Hampshire? Cackle Hatchery labeled them New Hampshire Red. Also, other than coloring, what is the difference between Production Reds and Rhode Island Reds or New Hampshires? Should the correct term be just Rhode Island then? What is the term Red identifying? What does "production" mean? Does it mean that the bird is more efficient in food to egg output, and therefore a less expensive bird to keep? Thanks for any insight you might provide.

Ill do my best to explain this...
There are 3 breeds that are somewhat all related to be explained later in this post -
Rhode Island Red Technically the true breed name is simply Red and Rhode Island is the state where is was originated but when it was excepted into the American Standard of Perfection it was put in as Rhode Island Red.
New Hampshires and the
Production "Reds".

The originators of the Red (Rhode Island Red) made the true breed name the "Red" so that stops any and all breed developed after the Rhode Island Red from having "Red" in there breed name.
For example you cant have a Ohio Red or a Chris's Reds and have that breed excepted into the standard. You could have the breed Ohio and a variety then could be Red...

A lot of people and hatcheries incorrectly refer the New Hampshire as a "New Hampshire Red" but the correct breed name as interned into the American Standard of Perfection is New Hampshire.

Production (in this case) is the term used for a breed used for efficient egg output.
The Production Red is Production breed and variety would be Red other variety's in the production category would be Black, White and Barred.

The Rhode Island Red is the original 'Red" and was used to produce a lot of new breeds as in the New Hampshire and the some lines of Production Reds that where bred solely from the Rhode Island Red with no record of outside blood being introduced. Rhode Island Red’s also has been used in crosses to produce hybrid breeds such as the Red and Black Sex-Link’s and some breeder believe a second line of Production Red was produced by introducing Leghorn blood into the Rhode Island Red.
