Is my roost too high?

How much room they have to maneuver must make a difference, right? If mine had to drop 8 feet in the tight area they're in, they'd be in trouble. But if they had a big building with room to actually FLY down, I'm sure it would be ok.

My coop is a rather large stone building.
They have plenty of room to fly down, not just drop.
Also there are things for them to land on higher up, and then go down to the floor if they choose. Also lots of hay on the ground.
On a humorous note, one of the "things" they land on coming down is a five gallon bucket containing scratch.
Yesterday morning they were on the roost still when I went in. I went to open this bucket at the instant one of my hens decided to fly down and land on it. She jumps down, I open the bucket, and in she goes. She sat there with this look like "what just happened?/ Where am I?".
