Is my silkie sick or broody?

Well she is sure not broody. Broody is where they sit on eggs and hatch them out. I have never heard of this case before. Wonder what it could be!

Please try to add some ACV ( Apple Cider Vinegar ) to her drinking water if you do not do so already.....it can help with any mucous.

I am going to contact somebody who may be able to help you further .....

Does she have any discharge from her nose? Is she eating and drinking? Do her poos look normal? Are there any other symptoms other than the mucous in the mouth? i agree with Suzie that Apple Cider Vinegar is an inexpensive option to try. Put a teaspoon in a quart of water. Best to get the natural kind, like Bragg's.

Do you have access to a vet who treats chickens? That is always the best option. Please let us know how Faith is doing today.

i also wanted to add that chickens get very stressed around the time they lay their first egg. With my first chicken, she was so upset, hiding on my lap with her head under my arm. i thought she was sick and took her to the vet. The egg eventually fell out of her behind after she got up on the roost to sleep that night. Then there was another shell-less egg hours later. After that, things evened out and she was fine. But it was very stressful for her, and me, getting through that process.

Still not sure what the mucous in the mouth might indicate. But just be aware that some strange behavior might be attributed to her laying her first egg.

Hello!
frow.gif

Our silkie chicken has been acting wierd lately. We took her out of the chicken coop because our other chicken bit her. we brought her inside the house in the bathroom, and we take her out daily. But now she has been acting very strange. she usually stands in one spot. One day when we came home, she was standing behind the door. on the towel, was her first silkie egg. ever since that day she was acting strange. Then, she started to have alot of spit in her mouth. she is breathing a little bit funny. Before she was not pooping. but now she is eating, drinking, and pooping!

Is she broody or sick? Please reply soon!! Thanks!

First thing, go in the bathroom and double-check for safety ... make sure there's no soaps, cleaners, etd., and nothing smaller than a golf ball where she can get to it ...
Then? Replace her water with an astringent solution of four teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar to each gallon of water (but not in galvanized metal containers). This helps w/ respiratory diseases/illnesses, and w/ many other things. The tannin in Apple Cider Vinegar helps to 'cut through' the coatings in the mouth, throat and intestines, imporving uptake of vitamins/nutrients, and help them expel the mucus.

Thank you all! Faith is doing a little bit better. I'll try the apple cider vinegar and I hope it works! We went to a store called Grif's and got her some probiotics and other medicine. Thank you so much for all your time and effort! :) good luck with your chickens! Have a great New Year's Eve, and Christmas! And God bless!
