I am new to chickens, just ordered my 2nd flock. First flock was given to us, have no idea what kind they were. They were wiped out by foxes/coons.
Anyway, have our new critter proof coop done, brooder ready.
I ordered among others, 5 Dominickers. Are they the same as Barred Rock? My neighbor, an old lady whom I figured knew more about chickens then I do , she said they are one and the same. But I see photos here were you all list birds and seems they are 2 types ?? Can you all clear this up for me ?
Thanks again for all the help I have recieved here!!

There are two different breeds, the dominique and the barred rock. The most visible difference is that the dominique has a rose comb (I think) and the barred rock a single comb. Other than that I can't tell them apart.

That being said, out in the boondocks where I live all striped chickens are called dominikers. Took me a while to figure that one out.

What else did you order?

You think you are confused! Growing up, we called whatever we had "Dominoes". I have no idea what they really were and can't remember comb details from that far back. After a couple of years all we had was mutts anyway.

They are both good dual-purpose breeds.

In my area many people call Barred Rocks, "Dominekers". This is probably originally a slang term for Dominiques but has often been applied by many people to any barred chicken.

make sure you wrap that coop in hotwire!!!!!

congrats on your new babies, you will love them...
you think thats confusing, dont get these people started on the differances of the ameracaunas and EEs and aracaunas.. BAhahahahahahahaha:lau i am STILL learning, and i have had chickens for 30something years!!!

people look at my cuckoo marans and call them barred rocks!!!! try to correct them!!! even my own sister did not believe me, thought i was crazy, making up some new breed
