Is purina feed okay?

Its best to use feed within 6 months of the manufacturer date.
Hudson feeds (Chewy) are good also but they don’t print a date at all. I found it frustrating that I had to call customer service and give them a lot number off every single sack just to find out when it was manufactured so I switched to Kalmbach.
The Kalmbach feed smells wonderful too- it makes me crave Italian food. 🤣 The chickens sure don't waste it, they love it.
Thank you!!

They'll eat it if it's the only they have to eat.

I feed 20% Nutrena Naturewise All Flock Pellets in a couple of other coops.
I had a new hatch and the only starter available was purina start & groe medicated. It smells like play doh, and none of my chicks have ever liked it. This time, I couldnt find an alternate. I had a chick die on day 4. I had tried everything, and even though the bird was eating the food a little more after putting some herbs in it, bird was malnourished. Ive thrown the food out and my birds dont want it. This is not the first time ive experienced this. I thought I was going to lose 12 chicks because they wouldnt eat, and I switched feed and it made all the difference. I will never use purina starter, and ive tried to leave reviews and REMEMBER why I dont buy their food. It seems negative reviews arent allowed. I am out the money on this entire bag. Ive seen chickens go without eating to the point of starvation, and I will never risk it again. My birds free range, get scraps, and I try to give them good feed they'll benefit from. No more purina for any of my animals (had some issues with the dog food and cat food as well. I dont trust it).

I have been feeding Purina exclusively for many years, have raised many generations of chicks on Purina starter and never ever ever ever had a problem at all. Just because you had some issues with your chickens, doesn't prove the feed was the cause, and doesn't say anything about Purina as a brand.

I have had this issue specifically with purina chick starter and while I cant be for sure there's something wrong, my experience with purina dog food and catfood makes me not trust them.

The food made my animals sick. I put it in the shed and the rats wouldnt even eat it. Found some coarse red metal thread in the dogfood after my dog had been vomiting and had bloody diarrhea. That was in fact the food.

I have good reason for not trusting purina, and for whatever reason, my chicks in the past wouldnt eat it and I had to replace the food and they made a miraculous turnaround.

This time, I didnt get the chance.

This isnt a one time issue. It is very fresh and upsetting right now because ONLY purina was available to me. I was hopeful and tried everything I could, and it didnt turn out well.

I apologize if I offended you or made you feel the need to advocate for their corporate interest, but I feel the things purina cost me cant be replaced. I certainly dont trust them any more today.

Out of all of my turkeys, guineas, quail, chickens, geese, ducks... nobody likes that starter. It is literally money thrown away.

We had our birds on Purina for quite a while. I agree, it smelled like Play-Doh. They did eat it just fine, though when Purina went and changed their formulation or whatever the hubbub was about that, we switched. After some research, we decided on Kalmbach. The first time I gave it to them, they immediately all started eating around the Purina, only getting the Kalmbach! They're still on the Kalmbach feeds - which honestly smell so yummy, haha.

Exactly. I love Purina. I fed it to the poultry (chickens and quail) when I had them and I feed it currently to my dog and when I still had my cat, she ate Purina too. Never any issues and in fact, the dog has always done best on Purina foods. And I have tried all sorts of boutique-y foods, etc. and always go back to Purina. LOL

I used to love Poulin Grain, a local brand. But I still love Purina too LOL but I get why people don’t.
