One question that each seller needs to nvestigate is whether the state, county or city has a minimum guarantee that you must provide (for example, many states have "purchaser's remorse" laws that allow certain types of items to be returned at no loss for several days (also , or shall I say especially, applies to contract purchases). I know all the pet stores here have a 30 day guarantee. Not sure about private sales.
A $400 vet bill is not that atypical for life and death situations, and exotic vets tend to be more expensive. Whether the vet actually knows rabbits or not is also a good question. I think if I had had the first phone call, I would have said, bring the bunny back so I can take a look. Assuming that the situation is legit, versus a scam, I would venture to guess that the vet is not a specialist in rabbits, that the food provided to the bunny was not what you specified was needed, and was probably a pretty attrocious diet (lots of iceberg lettuce, for example).
One way of ensuring that the bunnies you sell in the future have the proper diet (at least for awhile) is to make it a package deal--raise your price just enough to include a couple of weeks feed. I have a friend who raises and shows rabbits. When she sells bunnies, she has a handout that goes with the bunny, talking about the care rabbits need as well as what is BAD for them.
