is she up to something? craig's list irritation

I believe a breeder should stand by the health of their animals. As a breeder I would want to know what the animal died of. It is very possible that there was a genetic defect, that only effected the one baby. I would have asked them to take it to a vet I trusted. I think someone who doesn"t want to spend money at a vet should not be selling to the public.

Not trying to sound cold or anything, but not everyone can afford the vet. Esp. when you sell a bunny for $10-30. The OP stated that all of her bunnies were healthy, and she has not had any problems with them.

If I had more than one bunny getting sick, sure I would find out. But, not on one, that was sold to people who apparently did not know how to care for a bunny in the first place.

Rabbit's need to be cleaned a LOT.Especialy if their cage or pen is closed bottom.I wound up had a rbbit die and hubby had to put the other 3 down and literaly burn the hutch because they got a disease called "Vent" .I think that's what my friend called it.It's a wobble or worm that get's in them and basicaly eat's from the inside out leaving a huge hole. The 2 rabbit's I had to start were very healthy then I got 2 lionhead's at a local flea market and apparently they had it.My Last Pair I got were great.Hubby built them a nice wire bottom cage We made sure they had mineral wheel's and all the food and green's and they had a beautiful batch of babie's.Which lived in my basement all winter in o9 and the male was just running around a lot lol.I had a buyer complain about a turkey poult she got once I told her bring it back and I would refund or give her another one.But offered some help over the phone. She didn't bring the poult back.I found out later that she had crammed the poult into a small pet carrier when it had already been gradutated to a pen with 10 other's.

.No wonder it was stressed and listless.I had a $150 chinchilla die about a year ago I got from Pet Smart.Go figure it died on day 14 which is warranty and I couldnt find my reciept. And I had already had chin's and I KNOW it wasnt anything I did. Then That mess with their suppliers US GLOBAL, Baaaaaaa poor thing no wonder it died.I wouldn't give this lady anything. If it got sick they probably just didnt clean it and stuff.

The point I was badly trying to make is not everytime is it a scam. Babbies do die, not every baby is ment to live. A breeder willn't know if it is something in their line if they dont look into it. It is very easy to blame the new owner.

I'm almost expecting another call from her in the near future trying to harrass me for money or some some kind of scam. I'm not really worried about anything....just annoyed but wondered if anyone else has run into this kind of crap from people over animal sales. It's new to me and such a pain in the butt.

Hi! I hope they were just letting you know how hard they tried to save the bunny after they'd made mistakes and that's the end of it.
They will be better bunny keepers for the sad experience.

One question that each seller needs to nvestigate is whether the state, county or city has a minimum guarantee that you must provide (for example, many states have "purchaser's remorse" laws that allow certain types of items to be returned at no loss for several days (also , or shall I say especially, applies to contract purchases). I know all the pet stores here have a 30 day guarantee. Not sure about private sales.

A $400 vet bill is not that atypical for life and death situations, and exotic vets tend to be more expensive. Whether the vet actually knows rabbits or not is also a good question. I think if I had had the first phone call, I would have said, bring the bunny back so I can take a look. Assuming that the situation is legit, versus a scam, I would venture to guess that the vet is not a specialist in rabbits, that the food provided to the bunny was not what you specified was needed, and was probably a pretty attrocious diet (lots of iceberg lettuce, for example).

One way of ensuring that the bunnies you sell in the future have the proper diet (at least for awhile) is to make it a package deal--raise your price just enough to include a couple of weeks feed. I have a friend who raises and shows rabbits. When she sells bunnies, she has a handout that goes with the bunny, talking about the care rabbits need as well as what is BAD for them.

I agree.

I also think that getting a pet that is a new and different species from what one has had before does not make one an idiot. It merely means one is uninformed. Asking questions about proper care and feeding is responsible behavior. Even if they had had rabbits before, knowing the specific diet you feed could be useful--sudden diet changes can be stressful on many creatures. However, when you still got bad vibes, maybe you should have suggested a couple of books or websites for them to look through to learn about pet rabbits BEFORE taking one home.

Ditto.

We have been the victim of a seller before and there isn't a whole lot you can do other than keep people informed. We purchased what we were told was "pure" chicks and they were far from it. From a seller you have to wonder, in our case there were other victims that bought the same eggs and had the same issue. When we sell rabbits they leave here healthy and here in NC we can't sell them before 8 weeks old. Alot of people sell them sooner and that is a problem.

I will be more careful in the future about screening who I sell my bunnies to and have in the past sent home instruction/info sheets and starter feed (which is a great idea)....just didn't this time. My "idiot" comment was more for the possible scam behavior and not directed at someone just not knowing how to care for a different species. I honestly believe this is all a scam of some sort in the works and that they are not telling me the truth about the bunny's fate. Guess I will find out when/if they call again trying to talk $$$. I KNOW the bunny was healthy when it left here and the calls started less than 24 hrs later.
