I used a rubbermaid tub about the size of a large dog crate, but I had 26 chicks and they grew out of that before the first week was up. I went to Lowes (on the advise of someone on BYC) and got a large cardboard box and that lasted them another week and a half. So anything that keeps them safe and warm will work. It doesn't have to be fancy. Once the coop was finished, I took them out there just for the day, to show them their new room, but they were so happy with all that space that I just couldn't put them back in that box. We jsut moved the heat lamp out there and they've been happy and cozy ever since. I'm glad I didn't spend a lot of money putting together an expensive brooder for the short period of time they used it!
